Molecules is an application for viewing three-dimensional renderings of molecules and manipulating them using your fingers. You can rotate the molecules by moving your finger across the display, zoom in or out by using two-finger pinch gestures, or pan the molecule by moving two fingers across the screen at once. These structures can be viewed in both ball-and-stick and spacefilling visualization modes.
New molecules can be downloaded from either the RCSB Protein Data Bank (http://www.rcsb.org/pdb), an international repository of biological molecules and their 3-D structures, or NCBI's PubChem (http://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov), a public database of compounds. Molecules can be downloaded directly to your handheld device and stored there for later viewing.
Custom molecular structures can be downloaded to the application via iTunes file sharing, or through the use of custom URL formats. For more details, please visit our website.
Molecules is a BSD-licensed open source project.
- Added support for the new Retina iPad to the rendering engine and artwork.
- Added a color key for elements to iPad interface.
- Slightly improved rendering fidelity on iPhone 4S and iPad 2.
- Fixed a few minor rendering glitches.
Ratings and Reviews
Fast, clever, but keyless.
This app is extremely original, fast, useful and endlessly interesting. Useful for students and professors alike. One down side however is the fact that although each separate elemental atom has an individual colour, there is no colour key explaining the identity of each colour. Therefore someone could get mixed up with the simplest and most common elements e.g hydrogen and oxygen. Therefore, this almost perfect app has to lose an entire star. Still well worth the download time of 30 seconds! And it's free! Enjoy!
Yea ok, nerdy.... but study A-Level chemistry and human biology, so this interests me. Nicely presented and easy to use. I would echo other reviews in saying let us build some basic bit and bobs, like virtual molymods!! Also a key would be useful but I am quite enjoying working out the atoms :p would reccommed to anyone curious about chemistry!
This is a very interesting app. Great for learning about these atoms, especially if your needing it for work or if your interested in this thing. Easy to use controls and key. Very good images but unfortunately only six. Interesting at first but can be all looked over in under five minutes so....
