Matching Pairs is the first game since the highly acclaimed Mr Thorne Does Phonics apps which have had huge success on Youtube and the App Store around the world.
Mr Thorne's Matching Pairs is educational and fun. 99 games of randomly assorted cards based on the order of teaching letters and sounds, beginning with s, a, t, p, i, n, m and so on, leading onto digraphs and trigraphs such as 'sh' and 'igh'. Finally the spellings become more challenging with games focussing on the /or/ sound in 'talk' and the 'sh' sound in 'ocean'.
The player is encouraged to read the word and find the matching word. The words are not voiced because it is intended that the child should be blending the sounds together rather than hearing the whole word. The focus sound has been highlighted within each word for recognition however in later levels the entire word is coloured as the player's reading skills should be more advanced by this point.
Game structure: The words in each game are in sync with a child's ability, so the 's' level will not have the word 'sausage' because the 'soft g' words are in a later level. The 's' level instead features words that are easy to blend and read: 'sat', 'sip'.
There are some levels which feature 'HFW' - high frequency words (words that don't always sound how they are spelt) like 'was' and 'people'.
Each game is playable at any difficulty level and a silver star is awarded upon completion. A gold star is awarded if the player can correctly match all the cards in under 16 turns.
Can you achieve all of the gold stars?

Ratings and Reviews
Just loving this new phonics app! Lovely, colourful illustrations and it's great fun and easy to use. It'll be fantastic for supporting phonics sessions in school and I can see how it'd be enjoyable to play at home. Would certainly like to use it in the classroom with my Year Ones!
As I'm using the iPad 1, I initially had a few problems running the app, as did the users below. But with the update it looks like that's all fixed :) Thank you Mr Phonics for such a speedy response!
Matching Pairs is a great educational resource.
Not as described
1. Why would you start the easiest possible level with words like 'ask'? 'Ask' isn't even spelt phonetically for most UK speakers' accents! Also 'song' - relies on children having mastered digraphs. The App description suggests that each section can be played to any difficulty level. It seemed to me that as you said it starts with words that are easy to decode/blend, my daughter, who knows all of the single sounds and can blend several sounds in a word, should have been able to read every word in the 1st few levels. I must be missing where you get a choice of difficulty! Not suitable for my daughter at all. Maybe she'll grow into it in a year or so... (by which time it will probably have been deleted from my iPhone to make way for something more useful!!!)
2. I tried to upload a photo for the backs of the cards, but the picture is so distorted (squashed/stretched) that it isn't a recognisable photo on the card backs!
Altogether not much use!
Shame, as it looked perfect!
Can't wait to use this on placement!
Hurray! Another Mr Thorne App! As a student teacher I'm looking forward to having the chance to use this on placement. It's bright, musical and has that element of competition (trying to earn a gold star by completing the game in under 16 turns). Love being able to use photographs for the backs of the cards as well.
