Navmii (formerly Navfree) is a free community-based navigation and traffic app for drivers.

Navmii combines voice-guided navigation, live traffic information, local search, points of interest and driver scores. Enjoy offline maps stored locally that you can use at home or abroad without an internet connection.

Over 23 million drivers already use Navmii and our maps are available for more than 85 countries across the globe.

• Turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation
• Traffic, speeding, hazard and safety camera alerts
• Community update reporting (traffic, roadworks, accidents)
• Driver and Trip scores and analytics
• Smarter local search (TripAdvisor, Foursquare and What3Words)
• Search using Postcode/ City/ Street
• Local search for places of interest (POIs)
• Integrated Google Street View
• ETA indicator
• Automatic smart rerouting – as road conditions change
• Store your favourite locations
• HD accurate maps
• GPS - no data connection required
• Find your nearest parking, gas/ petrol, tourist attractions etc

Navmii features on-board OpenStreetMap (OSM) maps, which are stored on your device and therefore you don’t need a data connection (unless of course you use the connected services). Use Navmii abroad to avoid high roaming costs!

Gradually improving

This program has improved with regard to route finding in recent upgrades, and I hope it will continue to do so. The one thing that would make it much less frustrating to use is to prevent the automatic and often un-noticed recalculation of the route after one has deviated. We need a pop-up asking "You have deviated from your route, do you want to re-calculate?" or "New route calculated, revert to previous route?" Other improvements would be:
1. Pop-up saying when GPS signal is lost.
2. Ability to import and control visibility of third-party POIs, e.g., Archies camping
3. Approaching a roundabout in France where you are to take the first exit you may hear any of the following: "At the roundabout
- take the first exist"
- turn right"
- straight on"
Only the first should be used, and Straight On should be abandoned.
4. When changing from Guidance to map overview, the map should always be oriented North.
5. It is too easy accidentally to choose the 'green' route rather than switch between the alternative routes. This should be changed so that only an explicit choice of route allows the program to move on.
6. A screen indicator of map scale should be provided when not in Guidance mode.

We find having a compass in the car is invaluable for when the system makes an incomprehensible decision to go round three sides of a square - you need always to be aware of the direction of travel to prevent these needless and hugely irritating diversions.

Works, with some issues

For a recent trip out of the country I needed an offline GPS solution (I usually use Waze). I downloaded a few but I liked the features of Navmii (Waze but offline) and deleted the rest.

As it turned out the hire car had built in SatNav so I didn't use Navmii until I got home. I have now driven about 500 miles with it.

Offline so onboard route recalculate on (Waze panics when it a poor signal area, sometimes forgetting where it was trying to navigate to)

Community based Road updates like Waze

Clear maps and spoken directions

Multiple route and calculation options.

Maps are not up to date (the road I live on doesn’t exist, some roundabouts not present)

Some of the routing is random (telling me to go all around the roundabout to take the first exit)

Way point routes get glitches. This appears to only affect routes where the route back from the way point is the same as the route to it. The map display shows the arrows going in the wrong direction and the app will periodically tell you that there is a better route which essentially removes the way point and send you to your destination.

Battery life. Even plugged into the car I can lose 15% battery in an hour and the phone gets hot.

Would I recommend it? Yes. Could it be better?absolutely.

A fraction of the cost of other sat navs...... And without doubt the dogs danglies of navs. I use it all the time in the uk and when I had to go to America I found the US sat navs very very confusing. I pulled down the maps for California, Nevada and Mexico for navmii and the system never missed a beat once. The only negative I have is that it can sometimes be a little slow to re calculate if I miss a turn and what do I want an avatar for? And why oh why do I need to know where other users are? Yes I can turn that off, but really why have it? Surely it's bling that takes up software memory!! After all I'm not going to stop them and have tea n cakes!! Get rid of the silly bling stuff and update the sat navs speed and recalc adjustments and you'll have a winner through and through.
