The NHS App is the first national app from the NHS for all patients in England aged 13 and over.
Use the NHS App to:
• check your symptoms - find reliable NHS information on hundreds of conditions and treatments and get immediate advice
• book appointments - search for, book and cancel appointments at your GP surgery
• order repeat prescriptions - see your available medications and request a new repeat prescription
• view your medical record - get secure access to your GP medical record
• register to be an organ donor - easily manage your preferences on the NHS Organ Donor Register
• choose how the NHS uses your data - register your decision on whether it can be used for research and planning.
The NHS App is being rolled out across England now. Many key features will only work when your GP surgery is connected. You can find out if your surgery is connected after you download the app and open it for the first time.
If your surgery isn’t connected you can register your email address, and we’ll notify you when they come online.
Keeping your data secure
After you download the app, we’ll carry out a series of checks to confirm your identity. The app will then securely connect to information from your GP surgery. To keep your access secure, we’ll send a security code to your phone each time you use the app.
Bug fixes, performance, stability and accessibility enhancements.

Registration is frustrating
I’ve just registered for access to this and found it very frustrating. On my first two attempts on the video upload, it started with a 100% upload but then nothing happened and on clicking the only back link on the screen I was taken back to the login and had to start the process again. I then shut the app down and tried again, this time the video uploaded but I then made the mistake of reading the privacy notice. Again, here, clicking the only back button took me back to login and I had to start the process again (having already put all the information I needed away). I got through on my fourth attempt.
(iPhone XR, iOS12.2)
However, now I’m in the app it looks pretty useful.
Can I make a suggestion
This is a great app, everything you need to know about symptoms of illnesses. You can register your organs with the app and can order repeat prescriptions. I have one suggestion though, I think it would be a great idea if you have kids that your children’s medical records are also attached to the parents, as I have two young children I think it would be a good idea to be able to access their medical records as well as my own on the same app as they can’t read their own records and it’s the parental responsibility and rights to be able to access their child’s medical records and information.
App might work but if there’s no GPS....!!
I can only give this three stars as the government and NHS England seem to have their priorities wrong.
A decent app would be a great idea, if there were appointments to offer patients. But a lot of GP practices are under-staffed, under-funded and under HUGE pressure. Patients are not told why their surgery is seemingly offering a “poor service” and the expectancy is that GP Partners are greedy, lazy good-for-nothings.
As a practice manager of a 12,700 patient practice, I am horrified that a selling point of this app is that you can escape the 8am scramble.....NO! WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH GPs OR SPACE IN OUR BUILDINGS TO FIVE YOU WHAT YOU WANT. The NHS is failing under dreadful government tactics to privatise. Please, wake up and complain to your MP. We need help, not a bloody app!!
Developer Response ,
The NHS App is just one way that the NHS is trying to reduce the administrative burden on GPs and practice staff. It will give patients a new way to access existing online services like ordering repeat prescriptions and booking an appointment directly without having to speak to a member of practice staff. Practices will benefit as this will reduce the number of phone calls and visits they have to manage, freeing up staff to do other things.
Today, demand for online health services is increasing, with more and more people managing their health and care through digital tools in much the same way as they manage other aspects of their lives. The NHS is responding to this need with an app that for the first time provides a standard, national way of accessing the NHS online.
