What’s New

Version 12.0

Welcome to Night Sky 12!

Night Sky 12 is a huge update bringing some exciting new features and enhancements for macOS Sonoma:

+ LIVE SKY EVENTS - Never miss Live Sky Events again with Night Sky! A new indicator will appear in the bottom right of the Sky View whenever there is an interesting Live Sky Event such as a meteor shower or planetary conjunction for instance. The Live Event will also be highlighted in the Sky View and will only appear when the event is Live, so you'll immediately know the most exciting celestial wonders to view as soon as you launch Night Sky!

+ PRO GRIDS & LINES - We've added the equatorial line, the meridian line, equatorial grid and azimuthal grid to Night Sky. Turn these on or off directly from the Sky View.

+ INTERACTIVE WIDGET SUPPORT (macOS Sonoma required) - Night Sky now supports Interactive Widgets on macOS Sonoma! Favorite an object from the Interactive Widget to get notifications about it rising in the future.

+ HIGH RESOLUTION LIGHT SPECTRUMS - We've improved the resolution of all light spectrum arrays in Night Sky 12. See things you can't see with your eyes using the light spectrum filters available to change directly from the Sky View.

+ USER TOURS (Night Sky+ only) - Anyone can now make their own custom sky tour. Create a list of objects with your own images, and have Night Sky direct you to the objects in a sequenced tour. You can then share this tour with family and friends!

+ COMMON NAMES - Night Sky now recognises commonly used terms such as 'the big dipper' and 'the plough'. When a user searches for commonly used names, Night Sky will display the correct objects in the search results.

This planetarium in your pocket makes it easy to discover the wonders of space wherever you go. Day or night, just aim your device skyward to see a live 3D map of the heavens, complete with beautifully illustrated constellations, stars, planets and satellites. A special night mode helps you read the map in the dark, while integrated weather reports show the best times for stargazing. You can even have notifications alert you to future astronomical events.

I always recommend this app to people, I use it so often that friends and strangers react to it when they first see it and ask what it is. My favourite reaction was a 25 year old male friend of my other half exclaiming “look! she’s got the stars on her phone!” Even when I just discuss stars with people (simple stuff like have you heard there’s a comet?) I usually mention the app. My only struggle with it is that it doesn’t line up perfectly so it takes some time to work out where you should be looking using obvious constellations like the plough and Orion etc, but you can’t expect miracles from a free app, and being able to hold the phone slightly to the side of where you’re looking has its benefits for actually looking at things without killing your night vision.

I definitely recommend this app for anyone with a fledgling interest in the stars, I suggest learning some basic constellations to help you out. Talk to someone in person who can point out the plough, Orion’s Belt, maybe some zodiac signs, and then this app will do everything you could need it to.

I love this app. It does have one or two flaws

It’s a great app. This isn’t to say it’s a negative review. One thing that annoyed me recently was the notification of a new comet in the sky. Taping the “i” for info doesn’t give much detail at all. That wasn’t what annoyed me. It stated if you wanted more info on THAT particular comet go to the wiki page (and there was a link) however the wiki page wasn’t about that comet at all it was simply a brief run down of what “a comet” was. I was hoping to discover info such as distance. Speed the comet is travelling etc. Apart from that though it’s a great app to use and also easy to navigate around with great animations. The comet thing above is annoying but it won’t stop me using the app and I’d still recommend this app to anyone looking for a handy and nicely made star gazing platform.
