Nottingham Cave Trail

By Too Many Legs

This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.

Description

Nottingham has a secret - over five hundred man-made sandstone caves hidden beneath your feet. Some of the caves date back to the medieval period and beyond, and they have been used for many different purposes, from dungeons to summerhouses.

Scan a QR code placed at each cave location around the city or use the map to locate and investigate this rich secret.

The App features many exquisite videos created using LIDAR to capture the detail of the caves and presents them in a truly unique way. There are many previously unseen images and descriptions as well as detailed panoramic views of many of the caves which are otherwise inaccessible to the public.

The Nottingham Caves Survey, run by Trent & Peak Archaeology and the York Archaeological Trust, has been exploring caves since 2010.

This app was funded by English Heritage, Nottingham City Council, the Greater Nottingham Partnership, the British Geological Survey and Nottingham Civic Society.

Project produced by Hot Knife Digital Media in collaboration with the Nottingham Caves Survey.

Customer Reviews

Great idea, but very buggy

Nice idea, with potential; but (on iOS 9 at least) there doesn't seem to be any way back/out of viewing photos/panoramas/etc - no visible "close" buttons and no obvious swiping combinations get you out.

If there was a direct feedback route I could find, then I'd use it to relay these issues - but this review option is the only way I could find to get a message back to the developers (are you monitoring the reviews?).

Did no one test this before releasing it? The only way out of the photo gallery that I could find was to kill the app - not particularly clever! Am I missing something?

Nice idea. Needs some basic work

Great idea to celebrate the caves and inform us of Nottingham's history under our feet. Other reviewers have already mentioned some basic problems - not being able to come out of the slides or virtual panoramics without closing and wiping the app gives it an amateurish feel

Nottingham caves

If you look at the pictures of one cave it is impossible to return to the first page. Could be an excellent app if you live in Nottingham but until you can return to the start impossible to use.
