Ratings and Reviews
Not suitable for shorter people!
I used this app as I read a review online that ofo bikes were lighter bike models and were good for shorter people. After a pretty bad experience with the Santander bikes in London and reading this review I decided to give it a go. After visiting three spots to find a bike only one actually existed. The bike was easy to adjust but when I got on the saddle I could barely reach the floor; I’m 5”1! When cycling in London I think it’s key, especially for a beginner, to be able to support yourself when stationery. It is just as heavy as a Santander bike and I nearly fell off and was tempted to dump it. Also when I went to leave it at Waterloo (a popular cyclist destination for obvious reasons) the app told me I was out of their ‘operation zone’ and I would be fined 20 points?!? Not a great business model.
However the great thing about this app is that it works well and I had no issues with it crashing or being unresponsive and the fare is reasonable at 70p for a 30min ride.
I have requested a refund as I won’t be using it again.
You want to access my contacts???!??
Some problems with this:
On three occasions so far I have walked out of my way to find a bike, and it has not been there. Each time this has been in full view of the road all around and I have gone to the *exact* point indicated. Frustrating and a real timewaster.
On two occasions I’ve reported a broken bike (light cable severed, faulty gears) and have never had the promised extra point to the OFO score - making me question the point of the score at all.
But worse than this - in the latest update - is asking for FULL ACCESS TO YOUR CONTACTS if you want to recommend the app to friends (with an incentive of free rides). There is no way I would grant such access. At the very least there should be a manual alternative so you can hard-type email addresses, but it’s the intrusive, almost-desperate design of this new system that gives real privacy/data concerns.
Good service, annoying app
The bikes and prices ofo offer are pretty good, I’m 6 foot and so the seats are slightly low for me, but not so much that it causes an issue.
However the app needs some serious work as when trying to find a bike most of the results it shows on the map are false-positives: having walked to them you then usually find that there’s no bike there after all. I’d expect on average only about 1/3 of the bikes I try to find actually exist. Presumably the results I’m seeing are bikes that WERE in that location, but have been moved in the last few hours.
Fix the app so it updates bike locations more often and it’ll be a great service. As it stands it’s extremely annoying to have to wander around the city for ages on a wild goose chase.
