○ Adding things to OLIO is easy. Simply snap a photo of your item, add a brief description and provide pick-up details. A lovely neighbour will be delighted to take it off your hands.

○ Just browse what is available near you, request anything that takes your fancy and message to arrange a pick-up. It’s as easy as that.

Food items shared on OLIO include fresh homegrown veg from gardens, bread from local bakeries, and unwanted food when starting a diet, moving house or going on holiday. Other household items shared on OLIO include toiletries, cleaning products, clothes, furniture, toys and kitchen gadgets.

Editors' Notes

As kids we were taught to eat our veggies so they didn’t go to waste, yet as adults we’re often desensitised to the amount of unspoiled sustenance discarded worldwide every day. Olio helps find a home for unwanted edibles, using local postings that are a snap to create or browse. Whether a nearby farm is getting rid of excess rhubarb (it makes great pies, honest) or we’re going on holiday and want the chorizo meatballs in our fridge to end up on a neighbour’s plate instead of in the trash, Olio is a feel-good way to reduce food waste.

Not the godsend i prayed for.

When i saw this on tv, i was overjoyed, because thanks to ATOS, i’ve been eating 4 slices of bread and marge and drinking tap water for months and swapping the contents of my house for food and this gave me a chance to eat, and help stop £20 billion in food get binned.
Then i got a message yesterday, telling me the app isn’t for needy people, only homeless and needy people.
I don’t know what suddenly changed, but apparently, in Britain, if you’re not homeless and hungry, you’re not welcome.
The stupid thing about that is, homeless people get the same benefits i do, but i have a house and all the bills that go with it, so they’re living on the street, but financially, they’re better off than me, and once my possessions are gone, and i have nothing left to swap for food, i get to starve or join them.

Developer Response

Hi there, I'm really sorry to hear that you had a negative experience using OLIO :(. OLIO is absolutely intended for anyone who wants to share or pickup surplus food, or other household items, from their neighbours. If you would like to provide us with more details, please email on Thanks

First time success!

In the first week of using Olio I found five non-food items I need on offer for free near my area. Have already collected one. Thanks to Olio for including this category.
However some donors need to be careful about offering food already opened or grains long out of date which will clearly be rancid or dangerous to eat and could cause illness. All food donors should state the Use By or Expiry Date in their posts. Please use your common sense!
