The MapFinder

By Ordnance Survey Limited

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Description

The MapFinder app will remain for customers to use and access their purchased map tiles but unfortunately will no longer be updated with new features and content. For the latest and most up to date app from Ordnance survey search for ‘OS Maps’. This app also allows customers to download a digital version of their paper map, and view and subscribe to see all of the GB Ordnance Survey maps. OS Maps won the Digital Product of the year 2017 by the Outdoor Industry Association.

Please note: OS Maps and The MapFinder are not compatible and therefore purchases cannot be transferred between the apps.

The MapFinder is a large download. With it, you can search our 1:250 000 scale road map by place name, postcode or address. You won’t even need an internet connection to search as it also works offline. Then, via the in-app options, you can buy the OS Landranger (1:50 000) and OS Explorer (1:25 000) close-up maps of the areas you’d like to focus on.

Despite our original commitment to maintain this application until April 2016, we have continued maintenance into 2017. Whilst we will no longer develop content and features going forward, the application will still be available for existing customers to continue to use their purchased content. As operating systems are updated the application may become less stable. For the most stable and up to date application from Ordnance Survey we would recommend the OS Maps app.

The MapFinder includes:

• A free overview of Great Britain at 1:250 000 scale
• Free road maps down to street level
• Options to buy high-resolution OS Explorer and OS Landranger maps
• Route recording and planning tools – record your routes in real time
• Route import and export functions
• Time, distance, OS grid references, latitude and longitude
• Select a route, see how long it will take on average to walk
• Place name look-up – postcodes and places in Great Britain
• Ordnance Survey grid reference look-up
• And useful tips on how to read and navigate maps

App and Map sizes
The app is a large download. It has to save the maps and search database to your device. Please make sure your device has enough free space and you’re connected to a stable WiFi point before starting the download. The purchasable map sections are around 60MB each. If you want to save space, you can remove a purchased map section from your device, and then download it again (free of charge) when you next need it.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life..

Customer Reviews

Very disappointed after spending so much on in-app purchases

Early on when this app was launched, despite a lot of negative reviews, I found it did exactly what I wanted. Ordnance Survey maps wherever I go, on my phone. At the beginning there were lots of bugs, but in the last year or 2 I've had no problems. I have spent well over £100 on in-app purchases, but regarded this as a long term 'investment'. Unfortunately, now that the app finally works reliably, they are dropping support. Because of the nature of iOS updates, this effectively means that within the next year or 2 the app will become obsolete (I end up deleting old apps that don't get updated because they don't support newer screen resolutions, don't get 64 bit support etc, so it is inevitable that if this app is no longer updated then something will make it unusable in the near future). Very disappointed - and it makes me very reluctant to pay more money for their new subscription service.

Mapping at its best

This by far is the best mapping app available, and it just gets better with each update. If I was critical I have the same complaint as many. The price of the Explorer maps is by far too high
Above is my original review which was put on over two years ago. I now understand that all my purchases, which reach into hundreds of pounds will be lost. After speaking to your customer support people, they even acknowledge that this would happen in the future. On the original app purchase details, there was no mention of time limits. Customers have been misled. This is illegal. Update your software as all other developers do or refund the money you have taken through misrepresentation. No wonder my original glowing review has suddenly appeared at the top of your reviews when all others are negative, highlighting your lack of commitment and legal responsibility to people's purchases.

It's like you've stolen my money for the maps I've bought

I bought a lot of maps for this app - and now I find out you are no longer updating it - and the maps I have paid for are not transferable to other apps. That is a disgrace. No doubt with the next Apple iOS update this app will then cease to function - so that means you might just as well have outright stolen my maps and the money I paid for them. Frankly I'm furious. This is the last time I will ever touch one of your apps again. This is not the way to treat customers - not if you want to keep them. Your apps should be boycotted. I am going to make an official complaint to Apple about this.
