Simple but powerful
Easy to use but with powerful extra features which once you realise their useful make it hard to return to the Apple Podcast App.
Good in parts
I really struggle with Overcast.
The positives: it's a really strong app technically. Reliable. Feature-full. Everything I want for a podcast app. But it's the UX I really struggle with: I can't actually use it without thinking hard. Actual *thinking*.
A podcast app should be proper easy to use, but this isn't. There's no obvious home-screen which looks like a home-screen. The "play this episode" button is hidden in an expandable uitableviewcell, and difficult to discover.
The persistent player-controls view, at the bottom of the screen should be a great thing, but it's UI is too similar to the rest of the app and it's distracting because of this similarity. (Does that make sense?)
There's a toolbar. I like toolbars and so does Apple's HIG. But I don't like them at the top of the screen. Yack.
Confession: I bought this because I like Marco and his work, I like all his picture of Hops on Twitter. But Overcast is a struggle to use. Dude, get someone to look at the UX.
Maybe it's me. I don't get the Spotify app either, which is also a mess of navigationcontrollers, modals and buttons with mysterious little icons.
I'll persist, purely because of the Watch app. This is how I use Overcast, because there it doesn't deviate from standard Watch idioms - and I can use it without thinking.
Finally 3x speed. Now I can keep up with my fast-paced life AND listen to the podcasts I love.
