Author's joys!

I have been writing books of a few pages as well as books of hundreds of pages since the late 90s and I have always wished to dictate my work, as it is much quicker for me than typing. Right now, I'm 79 years of age and arthritis causes me ongoing difficulties coupled with pain when I try to type on a keyboard.

Using pages, which, in my opinion, is vastly superior to Microsoft’s Word, I am able to dictate my stories with much greater ease, not just in the dictation itself, but also having the software allowing me to vocalise back to me, that which I have dictated using voices that I prefer to listen to, thereby, assisting me in editing my own work before I submit it anywhere for publication.

This latest version of Pages is very good, indeed and I have tried IBM's speech app for Mackintosh, I have tried Dragon speak and I have also tried the earlier versions of Apple's text editors and word processes, but Pages has them all beat handsdown. It is an extremely useful well thought out program. Thank you.

Pages is my favourite word processor, it's almost perfect.

As an academic, it's hard to get out of using Microsoft Word for any documents that get written. I started using Pages for my undergraduate dissertation against the advice of my tutors as it would have been "too much bother". The fact of the matter is simple, the UI is so much more intuitive than MS Word, it's nicer to use, and syncs natively with my iPad and iPhone - therefore making the little extra effort I have to make to conform with peers alot more worth it.

As the title suggests, it isn't perfect, however. There are a handful of issues, which personally I would call inconveniences. The first being to do with captioning: the tool i miss most from Word is the ability to caption figures and not worry about renumbering them - a feature which for me would make it a 5 star review. The other inconvenience I have is the lack of a reference manager: though not an issue for me as I use EndNote, this is a feature that makes Word worth paying for as there is no need to buy another software to manage them, but I would imagine the average user would not need this feature anyway.

Other than that, Pages is great! Thanks Apple for yet another great app.

Mac Pages included (free)

It took me some time to familiarize myself with Mac Pages, having always used Word. Pages definitely does everything word does, and sometimes even faster and better. Apple have a fantastic support and care platform, and it is very easy to discover how to do things on Pages.

I recently terminated my "account" with Microsoft Word, having used the product for over thirty years. I "bought" the licence (twice to recollection) to use this product, but at a certain point I was stung with a subscription service. I paid this for a number of years before thinking through that if I'd been paying this "subscription" for Word for 30 years I'd have racked up around $5,000 in service. This is ridiculous given Word Processors have changed very little since first being introduced in the mid-1980s.

I now love Pages, and I can export to Word if I have to share with someone stuck on the Word treadmill. It's a win-win!
