Oh dear

First things first, nice looking app - custom controls I'm not a fan of, apples normal toggles that come with SDK are nicer than these, they are just too big and don't stand out from the rest of the UI enough - personal opinion of course. Remembering the last state of a bulb is also a nice addition especially if you want an RGB bulb to remember a particular white point. Rooms is a great addition too...

... But I'm afraid that's where the good ends. Not being able to select the colours I want in a room is... Well daft. I can't actually remember in the UI how to get to this feature - just been searching and frankly have no idea, but going on my memory when I did stumble across it, you are forced to use a photo, you can't place a bulb on the photo to select the colour you want... But what's more annoying is I can't get to the standard colour sheet (as in not using a photo at all) where I can select my own colours, group bulbs into a single colour and add others around it. This was one the best features in the old app and now it's gone... really?!?!?

I'm afraid the UX has suffered some what in this update, there are bugs too. I'm afraid until the basic features are back I'm going to continue to use Gen1, as right now Gen2 just doesn't do the basic things a user needs, and the basic user experience is just too confusing.

Does what it needs to

Isn’t it funny how people rate an app 1 or 2 stars because it either doesn’t do what they want it to do or they can’t figure out how it works? Is my kettle useless because it doesn’t make me cheese on toast? No, it’s designed to boil my water and it does just that. The Philips hue app is very easy to set up with your bridge and adding bulbs to it is very simple. Once everything is set up simply synchronise with Apple HomeKit. It’s important to understand that Apple HomeKit takes its settings from the Philips hue app so do all your rooms and setting from there first. Setting up rooms and adding lights to those rooms is simple. Light settings are remembered fine, like dim levels and auto updates are easily turned off is desired. I really don’t know how people are struggling with this app when it actually does everything it was designed to do with a simple and easy to use interface. I’ve only knocked off 1 star because I can’t see a way of grouping several spot lights together in to a group but I’m sure this will follow soon in an update. Don’t be put off by the negative reviews. I’ve not had a single issue with this app.

Great when it works

The lights have a really positive impact on my life (I have one bulb and two strips), but the app can be quite frustrating. The lights are invariably unreachable when I absolutely need them to be reachable (e.g. Trying to go to bed, rushing out the front door). The wake up and night time routines are fantastic. Luckily, waking up always works, but for some reason night time sometimes doesn't work. I go to bed expecting the usual 'sunset' only for the lights to not dim at all. I find this very stressful when it happens. Night time is also quite annoying in that the setting increases the brightness of the lights before dimming them, and changes the colour of the lights to yellowish-white colour. This completely changes the relaxing nature of the lights and can have the effect of waking you up if you've had the lights at say 50% in a dark green colour.

Overall, the lights are worth the inconvenience of the app glitches. Hopefully Philips will continue to work on the functionality of the app rather than on novelty features, which is what they seem to do.

N.B. The bulbs don't work with a standard dimmer switch. I wished I'd known before I purchased. I need to get a normal on/off light switch fitted.
