Plane Finder works by picking up real time ADS-B signals used by aircraft to transmit positional data to land based receivers. This technology is faster than traditional radar and is used for air traffic control and navigation. ADS-B is not used by all airlines or aircraft, however this is changing and the number of aircraft tracked by ADS-B is increasing all of the time.
Stunning first effort at a new concept
I acknowledge the comments others have made, but I think that Pinkfroot should be applauded for bringing a totally new concept in live traffic views to the iPad. I find it fascinating to see the traffic patterns approaching the major airports. Being able to rotate around the queues in three dimensions and to see the stacking patterns at peak times is endlessly fascinating.
It is disappointing that you can't see a joined up world in this view, but the memory constraints of the iPad make this impossible, so I think a good compromise as been found with the numerous high traffic area available to view as separate tiles.
Tighter integration with PlanefinderHD would improve things so that if you are following a specific plane and it starts to go out of the range of the 3D view it simply jumps into Planefinder seamlessly and continues, swapping back to 3D view if it enters an area covered by 3D, rather in the way that Apple Maps swaps views as you approach a 3D area. Again this may not be possible. But if it were it would be a great enhancement.
Support this app. These guys deserve it!
Okay so this is definitely a work in progress, but all the elements are there to make this a benchmark app over time. Pinkfroot never stand still, so I would expect some really cool features like liveries and HD terrain maps, rather than the blurred offering I get at the moment. It integrates with the 2D version, so I hope that the reverse will be true. The Fly Me feature is outstanding, though the ability to pan down while the aircraft is climbing would be nice, as would be a little altitude box in the corner of the screen somewhere. Tapping on an aircraft from the main screen should bring up a much smaller box than the present one, as it gets in the way. In any event, it gets my five stars already.
Stunning! Translates the 2D PlaneFinder information into a realistic 3D environment. Read the Details in the iTune Store as I couldn't find on screen instructions, that said it took no time at all to be zooming around the skies using standard iPad gestures. A good range of initial airports are included. For those new to PlaneFinder it also helps to understand that all versions of PlaneFinder are dependent on information transmitted from the aircraft and volunteers supplying information to PlaneFinder from their ground based receivers therefore not all flights and airports are equally covered. I have been a long term user of PlaneFinder and this supplementary app does not disappoint, although if it and the AR app could be integrated into a single PlaneFinder app it would be unbeatable.
