Pl@ntNet is an image sharing and retrieval application for the identification of plants.
It is developed by scientists from four French research organisations (Cirad, INRA, Inria and IRD), and the Tela Botanica network, with the financial support of Agropolis fondation.
Among other features, this free app helps identifying plant species from photographs, through a visual recognition software. Plant species that are well enough illustrated in the botanical reference database can be easily recognized.
This app works on different territories, the species list is available through the application. The number of species and the number of images used by the application evolve with contributions of end users to the project.
It doesn’t allow the identification of ornamental plants. It works even better than the pictures submitted are focused on one organ. Pictures of tree leaves on uniform background provide the most relevant results.
If you correctly identify a species, you can participate to the project by submitting your observation with the "contribution" button. These contributions subject to a moderation process will be validated collaboratively.

Ratings and Reviews
Worked far better than I expected
I didn't think this would actually work. I'm guessing it's got a lot more better at identification since some of the earlier reviews, as more and more photos are submitted from its users. I've always wanted something like this and now I really enjoy taking it out with my to learn wild flowers on (so far urban) walks.
Tips: it's focused on wild flowers, so don't expect it to work on cultivated flowers grown in a garden. Take close up photos, not ones of the whole plant. Take one of the flower and the leaf (or bark, fruit, where approprorate) if you can, and specify that that's what your photo is of. Follow the instructions! Contribute!
Great concept but glitchy software without online support
I was so excited by the concept but immediately disappointed by the app. It doesn’t work. I have tried reloading it but it still won't upload. There doesn't seem to be any support webpage or any other support structure. No FAQs or trouble-shooting advice. My app on iPhone SE with IOS 9. Trying to search the database with an imageor upload an image always goes though "sendng Request" but ends up with "Connection Error. Upload Failed". This happens on wifi and on 3G.
The app works very well. You need to appreciate how it works and not be lazy when it comes to finding the right match for your queried plant. Most of the time it works, sometimes it’s either the quality of the image you’ve taken that’s at fault, or you’ve got a plant that is rare/ hybrid, or just different parts of the plant have been photographed.
