PLAYMOBIL Pirates is free to download and play. As you play, you will collect virtual currencies called “Doubloons” and “Gems,” which are rarer, that you can use to buy pirates for your crew, ships or other in-game items. There will also be waiting times associated with some actions, which you can skip using virtual currency. If you don’t have enough virtual currency to buy an item, skip time, or perform an action, you can choose to earn additional currency gradually over time as you play the game, or purchase additional virtual currency with real money. In-app purchases range from £1.49 to £34.99. You can disable in-app purchases by adjusting your device’s settings.

Gets expensive to progress

A really fun game but be prepared, as you go up the levels things cost more 'coins' (not real ones, silly) and take more time to complete. This means you need to be out pirating more, unless your ship suffers in one of the all-too-frequent raids on your harbour/s, in which case you have to repair it and buy/build more defences.
Thankfully, recent upgrades have added more coin earning opportunities for your crew. Of course, if you don't mind parting with real coins you could always buy your way up the levels/achievements ladder.

Addictive for adults, can get boring for kids

I got this game for my 5 year old son, who has the actual Playmobil pirate ship & island.

He loved it, and will still occasional play, but now gets extremely bored & frustrated that it takes so long to get new land. And at the fact that, due to the amount of land already 'purchased', along with the tasks to-do, there is hardly anything to do - other than wait, and spend days earning money to buy more land.

A very addictive game indeed, for adults, rather than the children it's aimed a t - although, I get frustrated at all the waiting, & the 'expense' too!

Also, getting rid of the adverts for gems, was annoying. It was a great way to build up some gems on the side, as it were.

Would still recommend though. But your kids WILL get bored and frustrated, eventually.

Would be good if it worked ,,,

My 7 year old loves this game - although agree with other reviews that expensive (or slow) to progress. However most annoying is the bugs within the game that take pirates out of action, don't allow the collection of goods or actions to be completed - all essential to progress the game !!! GAMELOFT are really difficult to contact and do not respond when you record your bugs on their " known problems" page !!,
Such a shame the CEO of Playmobil isn't more interested in how their quality product is by this company ....
