Best app for painting

Let's get the negatives out of the way. Yes, it sometimes crashes (can you name an app that doesn't), fiddly and limited if you're a desktop Photoshop user. But do you expect a desktop Adobe CC in an iPad?! Most of us designers or hobbyists aren't going to create another Morgan Freeman on this, but we're gonna to try to design the next best thing. This is by far better than any freehand paint app in iTunes if you want to create non professional work and save it as PSD or any other format.
The idea behind it is brush tools being based on shape and grain, and you can adjust almost any elements of it. Also, it has some important tools, such us (in Photoshop language) magic wand, selection of some blend options, adjustment layers (although in this you adjust the layer itself instead of creating an adjustment layer), erase, smudge, etc. Get the idea? - Painting.
I highly recommend it for those that have creative ideas flowing all the time and love expressing themselves on a canvas, but not for novices. I wouldn't use it for mere sketching; Paper53 and Bamboo Paper are optimal for sketching.

The 'closest to perfect' drawing app there is

While I absolutely love the app - to the point it is what I use my iPad mini for most - I have to admit an incredible annoyance at the frequency with which it crashes.

The crashes aren’t just annoying (which they are) but they ‘cook in’ all previous steps of your illustration, so you lose your “undo” options which has on several occasions has left me with an unworkable image as I’d been testing brush~ or colour options. At times I find I can’t export the final image as a PSD to finalise in Painter or Photoshop as the image crashes at each attempt, meaning the image has to be exported as a limited flat JPG.
I have found some degree of success by restarting the iPad several times when working for prolonged periods.

With that rant out of the way, the interface is simple & intuitive, the brushes and tools realistic & fluid and on the whole the package very professional. So very close...

Excellent

I used to draw and paint a lot when I was younger but stopped for some reason. I have always liked the idea of digital painting (no mess, no fuss and portable) but never gave it a go until now. Having doing a bit of research I decided to give procreate a go and wow am I in love! It's fast, the interface is sleek and easy to navigate, there is no steep learning curve and it has a large range of brushes which you are also able to customise if you wish. Once you have finished your painting Procreate makes it really easy to export and share your art and I particularly like that you can export it as a PSD.I was thrilled with the end result of my first attempt and am now planning my next project. I noticed other reviewers complaining that it crashes, I have an iPad 4/retina and it hasn't crashed once yet.
