The ROBERTS MULTIMEDIA BIRDS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA iOS EDITION is a comprehensive and interactive application that combines multimedia data on 968 Southern African bird species with seven interactive modules for every aspect of mobile birding*.
The app can be used as a FIELD GUIDE (like the book), or as a BIRD LIST, with essential functions 'open bird page', play bird sound', 'add to list' and 'view similar birds' available directly in each module.
The FIELD GUIDE displays the full field guide pages of the Roberts Bird Guide book for instant comparison and identification. Use the family list or browse the pages for a bird, play the sound, add to your list, and open the BIRD PAGE for further detail.

The BIRD LIST includes includes all the new species and new names, with functions for Bird Page, Play Sound, Add to List, Similar Birds and Field Guide Page. You can also select regional lists, and English, Afrikaans, German, French, Portuguese, Dutch and Scientific names.
IDENTIFICATION uses your location, habitat, bird shapes and plumage to shortlist possible species for identification. You can also identify bird sounds, nests and eggs.
SIMILAR BIRDS loads a list of birds similar to that selected for comparison and identification. COMPARE BIRDS displays the bird pages side by side for direct comparison.
MY LOCATION is an interactive map for finding your current location, generating bird lists for your location, and locating birding sites near you. Or drop a pin for a new location with GPS co-ords, pentad and bird list. Or open a birding site list and site description.
MY LISTS is a personal list manager that includes a life list and sub-lists that report to your life list. You can also sync your lists to iCloud, and export lists to iTunes for backup. Sighting details include place, date, GPS co-ords and pentad, and sighting notes.

Roberts Birds-Best App for Namibia
You first look at the pricetag and think, how on earth can this be worth £50! However, after planning a holiday to Namibia, then using it every day many times a day whilst there and finally using it to check out my bird slides, I can definitely say that it is the best app money could buy.
The really good features include: reference to photographs in different plumages, the excellent and accurate maps, calls and songs on a loop, so you can leave it playing, bird lists for individual sites accessed offline and last but not least, the accurate details of where to go at each site. The latter section also helps you to plan your itinerary beforehand. A bit more detail, perhaps a local map, would be useful here.
As a British birder, I also greatly valued the level of detail in the description part of the app, which was even better than the Birds of Western Palearctic is for European birds.
Don't hesitate to spend your money, this is far better than any other app for South African birds. Highly recommended. 6 stars out of 5!
Brilliant - the long wait was worth it !
WARNING - just been told that iPad version will have to be bought separately unlike Sasol Birds who did not charge again when they added iPad functionality and display to their version !!! If you have an iPhone ... go ahead - if not ... be very patient until the iPad version comes out!
Roberts Birds has always been and remains the definitive authority on birds in Southern Africa. This iPhone edition is no exception and will be welcomed by all bird lovers exploring the region.
Those familiar with any of the electronic versions of Roberts will take to this edition like a duck to water. Newbies will soon find their way around.
Congratulations to the development team on producing a stable and intuitive product in its first release.
Now anxiously waiting for the full iPad version and hoping for a refund as I do not have an iPhone, just an iPad.
Best iOS Field Guide for Birding in Southern Africa!
Compares really well with the desktop version, in some instances even better because of the Google Maps integration. Very intuitive and easy to use and I like that you have the ability to export your lists, why not 5 stars then? The fact that this app is not Universal and that you are required to purchase a separate app for the iPad, very expensive exercise!
Up to six family members will be able to use this app with Family Sharing enabled.
