"In southern Africa the Sasol eBirds would undoubtedly be my first choice. The text is detailed, the navigation system is user friendly and the opportunity to listen to recordings of calls and songs is a huge asset. Above all, the superb paintings by Norman Arlott and Peter Hayman have stood the test of time and are more detailed, more accurate and more life-like than anything on offer in other birding apps for the region.” — Mark Cocker, author of Birds and People.
*We have added the option to purchase over 2800 exquisite photographs for 833 of the 969 species in the app to further enhance your birding experience*

Ratings and Reviews
Excellent technical support
I have used this app on several trips Southern Africa and found it to be a great help. Writing with pen and paper on a bumpy safari vehicle is not easy. This app is easy to use.
Most hard copy field guides only include plates, we have found that the photos have been very useful, especially in resolve those inevitable discussions when a group of birders cannot agree on the bird just seen.
In addition I have found the technical support to be excellent
Used the app extensively for a week now and become very comfortable with its logic and abilities. It mostly does the job very well however there are some issues needing attention which will make a big difference.
If you select a specific location I.e. Zim, then certain birds will not show up in a taxonomic search or alphabetic search even though found in the area. However if you select location ALL then the "missing" birds show up.
In My List, on selecting a bird in the list, it does not take you back to the page for that bird. This is annoying. No Geotags as an option, this would be a nice to have.
A life list would also be a good addition. Need to add the number of birds by location, not for the entire list only.
The compare function is restricted to two birds only. This is rather limiting in many cases of similar groups of birds.
The smart search is a great idea but needs more work on its flexibility. For example more plumage options or combinations. Birds feet colour would also assist.
Some bird sounds missing.
The app being compatible on iPad and iPhone is an excellent feature.
Don't waste your money
I bought this app to support my hard copy of SASOL Birds of Southern Africa for a recent birding trip to South Africa and Lesotho. To say I was disappointed is an overstatement: so many species are missing from the app. These include many commonly-encountered ones (I was going to give some examples of missing ones, but as there are so many I haven't bothered). The developers MUST revise their app with all of the species included in the book - even if items like song and calls are omitted for some of them. Rely on the hard copy for now - which has not let me down on five recent birding trips to Southern Africa
