Produced by Wessar International Ltd., SightRead4Piano is the brainchild of Christopher Wiltshire, whose widespread experience as a piano teacher, accompanist and repetiteur meant that efficient sight reading necessarily became a cornerstone of his career.

Spending four successful years at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Christopher was twice winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Composers Award. He gained a B.Mus. at Durham University which was followed by a Masters Degree in Composition (Sheffield) and a Doctorate at London University. The RAM awarded him an Honorary Diploma for “Services to Music”.

At last someone has come up with an effective piano sight reading app. Incredibly effective, forces you to move on with the piece and simulates the experience of accompanying someone else.

My only very minor criticism is that it would be helpful if there were more samples of the different collections available as I'm reluctant to shell out without getting a sense of what I'll be buying, but other than that this is first class and a must-have app. It even makes sight reading fun ... yes, really.

UPDATE ... a word to the wise: don't bother downloading the stuff from Rockschool. Very poor value for what you get, and I now see why there are no previews. £4.99 for six pieces (grade 3 ... yeah, I'm really good at piano) that are much less challenging than those from other collections.

Fantastic UNTIL!!!

*Update April 2014 - I have purchased all the boards I have spent £80 on music on it and it crashes. I don't know where to go or what to do for help!!! The landline on the website does not work!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!**

I'll be honest. I brought an iPad for this app. I met the man that came up with the idea 2 years ago and I was delighted to see it was more easily available now. Such a simple idea.

Music is fairly priced (you'd pay that for a book per grade) and it's great to use in preparation for an exam or just to generally improve your sight reading. I am a teacher and I am looking forward to seeing the results with my students when we try it!

I love the fact there are many boards. Each board follows a pattern to its nice to alter it and have the opinion.

There is only 2 negatives in my eyes.

The ABRSM music is the same as what is in the sight reading books which I think is a shame. This app is a great tool but you want the different music in the book so you can practice the sight reading actually reading a book which is more like the situation in the exam!!!

And I finally add more instruments than just piano. It's a great idea and there are other instrumentalists that could use this. Keep expanding!!!!

It's a great application, the only thing that is missing is the ability to customise the settings a bit more…

For example, I would prefer to wait only one bar before starting playing the peace, rather than two bars.

Being able to access the actual audio of the music to check that you have to played it properly would be very handy as well, and the application could also be used for sight reading inside your head for people that are studying just music theory and not necessarily an instrument…
