Ratings and Reviews
I don’t seem to suffer any of the problems reported in other comments here, e.g. connection to the sky boxes is fine (it could be the Wi-Fi rather than the box), freezing during downloads, skipping, etc. But I do have a major complaint in an error (error 71-1) that crops up once in a while when trying to watch a downloaded program when out and about. It seems the app insists on connecting to the Sky box before it will allow you to continue. Imagine the frustration when you’ve download a few programs to watch when away on holiday, you sit down on the plane to watch them and you get this error, knowing that you will not be home for two weeks and so you cannot watch anything the whole time your away. This error has been around a long time, it’s been reported many times to Sky via the forums, but they appear to just ignore it. My one star rating is more for the lack of engagement from Sky to resolve such issues than for the app itself.
Other niggles I have include not being able to view the TV guide in landscape mode - in portrait mode its very difficult to see what’s on during the evening. And also the ability to delete recordings from the app, please bring that back, it was available in the old app. When multiple recordings are grouped under one title it often uses a deleted episode as the title rather that one that is actually in the group, which can be a little confusing.
Expected much better from SKY
I’ve been using skyQ app for a long time. The ability to search for a program is fine and good. But neither in this app or on the set top box can you search for a channel. Let’s say you want to watch a channel dedicated to cycling that someone has told you about. You don’t know what number it is on. If you search for cycling the results only show programs with the word cycling in them. What if this channel doesn’t have a program that has that name in it? Maybe they have called their programs Bike Show or Road Bike Adventures.
So then you have to trawl through the channel categories and hope you can find it.
The other BIG problem is when you search for a program like I just did and entered Cycling as the search term, you get a list of relevant programs which is good. When you select a program you then go in to a sub menu of all the different times it will come on which is great. However, if you then want to go back to your original search results you cannot. You have to go to the search icon which has now forgotten your last search criteria and type it in again. Come on Sky!
Connection and Speed issues will make App Fail
Seeing some of the comments on here I can sympathise with the issues that are being experienced. However in most cases this will be down to the router and internet connection speeds. I too experienced the same issues as described and then upgraded to a better quality higher band width router ( the ones provided by internet providers are pretty poor excepting the BT6 box). Once employed all problems have disappeared and the use of the SkyQ App is faultless. This App requires huge data download requirements and sadly most people's routers aren't up to it. Seriously upgrade to a quality router and you'll find that all applications will improve in speed and quality. Not all just about internet speed although you would need to be on at least a fibre connection running at 25mb minimum.
