Couldn't live without it

Sugarsync is a fantastic service, provided by a developer who is constantly improving the product. Case in point - ninja mikey you were disappointed that you couldn't sync photos taken on your iPhone back to your desktop, well following the last update you can do just that. They also recently added the ability to stream ALL the music on your desktop to your iPhone without the need for your desktop to be turned on (which is the flaw in most other streaming apps).

In short, for a few quid a year I get local copies of all my files on all my computers which are always in sync, I get a cloud which I can access from any desktop with an Internet connection and edit any of my files (with any changes I make immediately copied down to all my computers), I get to play any music track stored on my pc on the iPhone whenever I've got a mobile signal, i get to view any of my files on the iphone when i'm out and about, and I get the security of knowing that whatever happens to my files I can always go back to the cloud and undo any deletions or role back any file to it's last five versions. And most impressive of all, all of this just works, and works flawlessly (take note Apple). You need this in your life!!!

Does what it says on the tin. And then some more ...

I have been using Sugarsync for nearly two years now and I am a happy user. I have a mixed, multi-platform, multi computer setup with the main machine at work being a big Mac Pro, the roving MacBook Pro, an ancient Windows XP machine, an iPad and an iPhone. I write software, analyse data, prepare teaching materials, write research papers, I manage some 80 students as a Director of Study, run several undergrad and postgrad modules - I am a busy academic. So I don't want to have to think whether I copied that file (or seven) to my laptop to work on it at home, to my iPad to read some papers on the train or on the sofa. Sugarsync does all that without me remembering about it. And then it remembers several past versions, allows to share files etc.

The customer service is good, usually pretty fast and they are patient. I am not the easiest customer: I know what I want and will demand it till I get it (politely), but they managed to sort out my queries satisfactorily. Not that their help is needed much - a set and forget situation for most of my needs.

So yes, it is a good piece of software, recommended.

It works

I use a number of cloud services: Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud and Sky Drive. They are all good and each have their limitations. SugarSync's advantage over the others is that it allows you to specify which of your existing folder/s to sync to the cloud, rather than creating its own folder that you have to use as the others do.
When using SugarSync with an iPad, it's main advantage is around the area of offline access. Unlike Dropbox which only allows you to mark individual files to be available when offline (which can be tedious if you want many to be available), SugarSync allows you to set up complete folders and subfolders for this purpose.

Like the others it offers a basic level of storage for free (in this case 5gb) and you can purchase extra for an annual fee. Whilst the initial level of storage is more then Dropbox (which only offers 2gb), the cost of further storage is higher.

SugarSync also wins the file sharing battle in terms of functionality and ease, though the bulk of my friends and colleagues have a DropBox account, whereas I have yet to find one who has a SugarSync one - making it necessary for me to use DropBox more.

If you need more than the basic levels of storage, then you pays your money, you takes your choice. If this is not an issue, then Sugar Sync wins the battle for me - the bottom line is I would always use SugarSync if file collaboration with friends and colleagues didn't force me to use DropBox too.

Heartily recommended!
