Retronyms has partnered with industry giants like Akai Professional and Arturia to create some of the Tabletop-Ready Apps, like iMPC, iMini, and iProphet! Using the Tabletop features of time stretching and pitch shifting, you can slice loops and time stretch them to different tempos and pitches in iMPC Pro. You can also use sliced loops from purchased AudioCopy sound packs inside Gridlock and iMPC Pro. Loops from these sound packs will automatically match the tempo of your sessions.

Tabletop is an audio playground where you can create beats, compose songs, mix live, make mashups with samples from your iPod library, and more... the possibilities are endless. Plug the output of a keyboard into a delay to add an echo, or wire it up to a mixer and adjust the pan. Chain up multiple effects to create new and evolving sounds.

Quite a detailed review.

Well for starters im gonna talk about the equipment available in tabletop
The drum machines, effect and the mixers are the things which i have absolutely no problem with. But such as the synth and the turntables, wheres the creativity. With the synth i can only see an ADSR option, it should be like a more watered down version of nlog synth, that would be a massive improvement. Reason for this is that users could be able to create new sounds and fx instead of presets. Also the turntable are ok...But when it comes down to sampling of them. Its a long and hard process. Maybe waveform view and chop markers? Now i noticed a giant bug with the ipad 2. It just keeps closing once trying to open the app, everytime. I hope this may have impact and take this review on critically. Because this app has major potential, and may even be better than certain over apps such as beatmaker if some work is put in.

Looks good but...

Retronyms's rebirth of Rebirth always left me cold: impressive on the screen but too darn fidly to use. On the face of it, TableTop seems to be going in a more productive and fairly original direction. Even £2.99 for the basic app seemed positive. But after spending an afternoon with it, I'm feeling overwhelmed by its limitations and rather taken in by the hype. The idea of charging big prices for what should be included in the main app - reverb, delay and so on - is plain stupid and bound to alienate customers. The sequencer module is rigidly 4/4 and triplets are out of the question; the available samples are also pretty dire. The keyboard module is extraordinarily limited - two octaves only, no step-time entry, ADSR mods only, and generally poor sounds. I could go on, but I'm bored already. And even on an iPad 2, I'm getting occasional glitches with the CPU meter reading in the red - and that's with a track whose complexity would barely make the NanoStudio CPU meter hit 20%. It's best avoided at the moment, I think.

One of the very best thus far

Why whine over three pounds for an app? Even if you buy a reverb and delay, that makes it nine pounds which is still cheaper than Nanostudio and FLmobile.
One thing to consider is that this app allows you to tailor a set up according to your needs for each track, in my case, I make ambient/ generative music which means I need a few reverbs and delays to get this effect. No other app does this.
As far as the built in sounds go, they are great, you just need to know how to use them. If you want to make hard dance music, go buy a laptop and use ableton.
This app is for professionals, not wannabe djs still in school. I have been producing for over fifteen years and am very happy with this app.
Sure, there is some audio clipping and the developers are taking care of that. Even some other great apps had some issues, it takes time to identify them by releasing the app and waiting for feedback, beta testing is not infallible.
Buy the app for three quid, if you are not happy, you don't have to get the add ons. In any case, apps are so much cheaper than hardware and software.
This app has definatly forged a new direction in iOS land, and as a fan of Reason, I am grateful for this app.
