UPDATE - FEB 2015
This will be my last update… I don’t think the developers have any interest any more… I notice that the last update to this little APP was in 2010. I’d love to use their online Telegraph pages, but I’m a Telegraph subscriber and would still have to pay for the privilege when I can get the Guardian and other Daily Papers’ puzzle sites free!
I’ve just downloaded ‘Cryptic Crosswords’ from the APP Store - no fussing around pressing loads of buttons to get back to where you left off with it…. so this sad, neglected little Telegraph Crosswords app will be relegated to the bin! Shame
Update- January 2014
I still love it, but don't play it as much as I would if you could get back into it via a single tap... It drives me mad; PLEASE change this if poss? I see I'm not the only fan to ask for this.
Update - August 2012: I still think this app is very good BUT, I confess to being pretty irritated that if you come out of the app, leaving it open, you have to go through the opening sequences and at least four pages/actions to get to where you left off... So infuriating! PLEASE can the app either open at last used page, OR at least have a one stop 'continue' button to get there quickly.
PREVIOUS REVIEW - We're 7 day takers of The Telegraph and love the cryptic and gen knowledge x-words in that broadsheet; This app is all-round brilliant. Very user friendly, huge number to chose from. Fantastic. Thank you.
OK, but could be better
A previous reviewer complained about some of the words in the puzzle. OK, the puzzles can be very difficult, but all the words they mention are in a good dictionary, so you can't complain about that. However, the app is weird in places: the 'timer' at the top doesn’t seem to relate to real time, you can only reveal letters (not check them), its too easy to get the 'reveal box' to open when you only want to see a clue, you sometimes need to double-tap to reveal a letter, a French(!) dialogue appears at the end of the game and it's not in HD form suitable for an iPad. So, overall, it's not really too brilliant, but at least it gives you access to the Telegraph puzzles. Further improvements could make this very good.
Good app to while away the hours
The app has an extensive selection of crosswords (200 quick, 230 cryptic and 70 general knowledge) with an intuitive interface (used on the iPhone 4). I find it responsive and easy to use and have enjoyed many hours on the app. The only two annoyances are firstly the fact, as mentioned in other reports, that the app doesn't remember which crossword you are on so you have to go through the menus again if you switch out of the app for any reason. The second is that you can't play your own music while using the app. If those two things were changed I would rate it 5.
