Brilliant game, but are the odds right?
I absolutely love this game, it's a genius twist on poker that's been really well thought-out in terms of gameplay rules. The only question is whether the odds are accurate. I took a couple of screenshots and posted the hands into the very well-respected PC poker odds calculator PokerStove, and while it usually (but not always) picked the same favourite, it came up with some very different numbers. The following list gives the hands, the Texas Pick'Em Pro percentages, and then the odds PokerStove came up with for one example. As you can see there are some quite wide discrepancies.
7s6s --- 12% --- 2%
9c8s --- 10% --- 3%
Ac3h --- 10% --- 21%
Qs8h --- 9% --- 8%
9s5s --- 10% --- 7%
Jh6h --- 11% --- 7%
JcTh --- 13% --- 7%
Tc8c --- 14% --- 9%
8d5d --- 11% --- 15%
Kh7d --- 9% --- 13%
Picking the Tc8c as favourite over the Ac3h is very odd, especially since all four 8s are already out and the 10 is dominated by the JcTh. (And half of the cards it would need to make a straight are also gone.) It needs to hit three of the eight remaining clubs, but will lose if four of them come out.
None of that affects how much fun the game is to play, but it does cast some doubt on how useful it is as a poker learning tool. Plus there's the incredibly sloppy way the $ sign goes offscreen when your cash reaches five digits, so one star off...
Texas pick em
