Description

‘The Dragon and the Eagle’ tells the remarkable story of those Welsh men and women who took the huge risk of leaving behind what they knew by starting a new life in America. Their history is relived through an enhanced eBook format, which supplements the text with a combination of images, interactive graphics, audio and video (narrated by Cerys Matthews). This creates a rich, varied reading experience while discovering the way in which Welsh emigrants became Welsh-Americans, and how they maintained their distinctive identity over four hundred years.

About the Author:
Born and raised in Wales, Colin Thomas is a writer and director who produced C4’s history of Wales ‘The Dragon has Two Tongues’ and has directed numerous dramas and documentaries for ITV, S4C, C4 and the BBC. He has also written the book ‘Dreaming a City’ regarding the embattled city of Donetsk. His awards include a Prix Europa, the Jury Award at the Celtic Media Festival and, on three occasions, Best Documentary/Drama-Documentary award from BAFTA Cymru. The FT wrote of C4’s ‘The Divided Kingdom’ that it “bears the name of Colin Thomas as one of its directors, a guarantee of intelligence and scrupulous integrity”. In 2012 he was appointed Honorary Fellow at University of Newport for services to documentary.

* Bill Jones, the Professor of Modern Welsh History at Cardiff University, describes ‘The Dragon and the Eagle’ as “a very lively, entertaining and informative work; it tells the story of the Welsh in America in an excitingly new and innovative way.”

Highly Recommended/ A Must Read In and Out of School

The publication of ‘The Dragon and the Eagle’ breaks new ground in that it provides valuable insight, in digital format, into the documented dilemmas experienced by Welsh emigrants to America. The enhanced e-book, that features interactive graphics and video to support the text, breaths fire into the presentation by Colin Thomas, whose great great grandfather accompanied many of the emigrants across the Atlantic, without being tempted to set roots away from home himself.

The Welsh faced dilemmas common to many migrants, such as is so relevant today, including the retention of identity, culture and language, while striving to become good citizens.

The history of both nations, being intrinsic to the story being told, is aided by documentation, music and interactive maps to good effect.

Digital education being in a transitional phase currently means that productions of this calibre offer a new relationship with end users in and out of school. Multiple media platforms offer valuable contributions to curricula that are ever evolving, leading to opportunities for collaborations among creatives and industries to further develop content in and for Wales and beyond.

Interested in American History or just a Cerys Matthews groupie? This Ap should please both constituencies. Narrated by Cerys, this innovative multi-media ebook combines film, text and song to explore the Welsh in America and their changing take on freedom, slavery, politics and cultural identity. Passionate polemical and well-informed, it offers an accessible introduction into this neglected subject and in so doing affords some intriguing insights into American society, both past and present.

Great for Welsh family historians - & Cerys Matthews fans!

A history book with loads of multimedia extras, I really enjoyed this - particularly the imbedded videos, which are really well made and narrated by Cerys Matthews (love her voice!). I'm researching my family tree and hoped it would help put flesh on the bones of ancestors who emigrated from Wales to America - it certainly fulfilled that brief, and rather more entertainingly than I expected. The author's personal reflections and friendly tone stop it feeling dry, and the short films give a great overview of each chapter. Found myself wanting more of them, in fact.
