FAKE! I do not believe the 4.5/5 rating.

Feb 2018. My experience with this app for a couple of years has been entirely negative. My current complaint having bought an iPad 2017 has been the limited content of The Economist visible due to the low resolution of the image presented. Because it’s an image I can’t change the text size. I can only unhelpfully reduce the size of the limited image by 50%. More content is visible & more readable on my 5” phone. Support is aggressively unhelpful. My recent emailed complaint eventually responded by asking which OS the iPad 2017 was running. Better to read TE on the web. I bought the iPad mainly to comfortably read subscriptions while traveling. Of them all only this app doesn’t do its job and my engagement with the TE content has dramatically reduced which is the most annoying thing of all as I appreciate the content highly. I may need to stop the subscription and revert to buying the printed version when inclined and lose digital access. Bizarre that such a premium publication has such a worthless official interface. **NB: recent update comes with release comment: “App should(!) remember your position more frequently.” A basic feature of reading material seems a challenge to the developers who can’t even be sure of being consistent.

Poor app design and typography ruin the great content

I am a loyal reader of the Economist. I love their content and analysis but this app after its last major update (mid-2017) made the reading experience horrid.

The images on all articles are not properly sized to easy viewing. They sit awkwardly between paragraphs. Before its major update they made use of the limited space on devices really well, now there are unnecessary margins around all images.

The font size is adjustable, but only to the large side. It thus requires endless scrolling to finish an article. The same problem is even worse on iPad, which is designed to make reading on a device similar to on paper. Previously there was much more content nicely aligned on a single view of the screen. And now? Endless scrolling with large margins on both sides.

The app also does not support iPhone X, four months after its launch. Most major publishers (e.g. Guardian, FT) have already updated their app to make use of the larger screen. The Economist still has not and that made the endless scrolling more an issue.

I wrote an email to their customer support to give suggestions, suggested that they may want to consult typographers and app designers on improving the above issues. And there was not even a single reply acknowledging the receipt of it. I did not expect a redesign, given that it was just a single user’s suggestions, but a simple reply out of courtesy would be much appreciated.

Great Audio feature

The Economist's mobile app is of good quality. Of special interest to me is the audio feature as it allows access to The Economist's great articles whilst walking or in the tube. All the articles are read by real people (a man and two women who take their turn) in a very clear English. I have paid a particular attention to the pronunciation of some weird words and expressions found in the Science and technology section: this was faultless. Thank you to the Economist for keeping this humane and high quality touch in our digital, and often too synthetic, world.

Addition to this precious: a totally new app has been released since my review. This didn't go without troubles but The Economist have been prompt to correct a few very annoying design issues and plain bugs. Thank you.
