Ratings and Reviews

Mr Xyd ,

Doubt old version is coming back

Update is terrible- basically a worse version of the website. Scrolling down, terrible font, lots of white space - pretty much unreadable. Having investigated online, it seems the recent update involved a change of app provider - to the same company which made the until then good Investors Chronicle App similarly unreadable a few years ago. However, the new Economist App is worse as the articles are much longer- you could easily be scrolling down 6 feet of text now for one of the features.

With the Investors Chronicle app not having been improved in the years since the change, doubt we will see a change here either so have asked for refund on unused portion of my subscription. Makes me angry to think of the contempt the magazine must have for its subscribers to take such an action, presumably to link seamlessly to the website and reduce cost- despite taking the money up front via a subscription.

I read a lot of chess magazines, who have been able to produce very good apps replicating the magazine reading experience with presumably a small fraction of the subscriber base of the Economist.

New version has lost the feel of the printed newspaper

No doubt the well-paid designers know more about this sort of thing than the ignorant subscribers, but in my view the new 'look' of the iPad app has lost the familiarity of the print version it should emulate. The new layout presents the article in the same way as all the other article viewers (Pocket, Instapaper etc.) and without the style of some others (Flipbook, Medium). Whereas it should just has stuck with reproducing the print newspaper. Now the text is too large, and the important charts and graphics are too small. The layout, in long galleys, is clumsy. Worse, it is boring.

The app should pass the 'squint test': I should know at a glance that I am reading The Economist, instead of just a random article clipped from the web. This app fails that test, and even leaves me questioning renewal of my subscription. I may just revert to buying the occasional print copy, as I have done since 1982. Because if the design of the iPad app adds no value, why pay the money?

You can no longer store and access back issues -grrrr

This was such a great app.

It still loads very quickly, and delivers a fine reading experience.

But this new update has taken away all the back issues. You can only access the last couple of weeks.

Oh sure, there's Instapaper, but that is the opposite of serendipitous reading, as you ave to decide what to leave for later.

I have enjoyed having the Economist as a chronicle of the year, not by keeping every issue, but having a few to re-read to see how thoughts have developed over time.

And it has been handy to have some rainy-day material to hand, such as the special reports and the Double issue from Christmas. There's been plenty of nicely undated material to fill in gaps between news and fiction.

All gone. And in the same week that Guardian has shown just how, by using big brains and lots of leadership, to make a great app that delivers a complicated newspaper digitally. I think maybe the Economist doesn't care for what it may have said last month.
But perhaps it could give us some live links to the archive, and some old issues on our shelves.
What was a five star product has been turned into a three star total experience for this longterm print reader who had happily, until now, been dreaming of going digital.
