Editors' Choice

Beautifully designed and easy to navigate, this app from the award-winning newspaper delivers the intelligent stories and thought-provoking analysis that the periodical has been known for since it launched way back in 1821. From insight into the evolving pop-culture scene to the latest breaking news, The Guardian provides incisive coverage in a thoroughly modern format through captivating photo essays, thoughtful op-eds, essential sports reports and even interactive crossword puzzles.

My favourite and most used app ever

First, an admission - I love The Guardian. I’ve loved the paper for years - for their editorial style and stance as well as for the sheer, world-class quality of their writers and the subjects that the publication covers, which are broad, deep and engaging. But the app is, quite literally, a world apart from other news apps. And this, their latest design, makes something that seemed perfect even better. I love it. It makes me want to use the app more and more. It’s gorgeous and now the yardstick by which all other news apps should be judged. I’ve tried others but none have come close to the Guardian. It’s my most used app since I’ve had it, on my home screen, for nearly a decade. I cannot say enough how much I adore this app. Colour coding of sections might be helpful and the widget is a bit crap to be honest. But this is a wonderful, wonderful update. The Guardian, I adore you. You’re brilliant. I will never stop using you or subscribing. Because I know I’m getting the best experience it’s possible to get for a news app. Just brilliant. Thank you

Great Journalism; Redesign simply awful

The Guardian has been my paper of choice since my student days of the 1980s, and I pay the suggested monthly £4.99 as a supporter.

I loved the previous graphic design, and don’t see why it was necessary to chance it just because the print paper changed to tabloid.

The logo looks like a ghastly military stencil stamp from decades ago, and the relaxing blue has been replaced by an off putting stark black and white. I wouldn’t normally spend so much time commenting on the graphics, but I found the app previews and indeed the sight of the new look print paper in the shops so off-putting that I have made a point of not updating this app and instead sticking with the previous layout. (Long ago with other apps, I learned the lesson of not allowing apps to update automatically without first checking for usability issues, due to incompetent or unscrupulous developers adversely affecting an app with updates that were often the very opposite of an improvement.)

Sadly, if the visual layout puts you off reading the material, it has failed in its primary purpose to appeal to the reader. The usual ‘once you get used to it you’ll like it’ suggestion won’t wash with me, I’m afraid.

In summary: 5 stars for the content, 1 star for the graphic design. Please bring back the well loved previous design.
