Pathetic version of the old newspaper
Sadly just don't believe those that say this is a great app - it isn't. The content is not well presented for example there's no options to select only content (sections) you are interested in and moving within the 'paper' is clunky, menus are not smoothly accessible and even page turning is erratic. Worse still is the fact that this just doesn't have the same content the newspaper used to have - there's no TV programming section and many of the news snippets are not present in the electronic version.
I do hope that the Independent can get their act together and improve the app and content and that they don't just try to continue to convince readers that everything's fine by telling them it's all wonderful - Some of the reviews I've seen must have used a totally different product the the one I've bought (yes I do subscribe) if their experience is really so much better than mine and likewise some of the written commendations are nonsense - I read one claiming that the iPad version is so much better than the paper as the reader no longer has to wash his hands to get off all the newsprint - Really ? What on earth was he doing with his paper? I have read the Indy for years and never once felt the need to wash my hands afterwards.
Fundamentally sound, but buggy
First of all, it's great to see the Indy carrying on online, and I hope it goes from strength to strength.
When the app works as advertised, it's great. However, more often than not it doesn't. Typically the latest edition hasn't downloaded in the morning, and I need to download it manually by hitting the 'Download' button, ...and then bizarrely hitting another 'Download' button. Despite having high speed internet the download and processing then takes a surprisingly long time.
Once downloaded, the edition is easy to navigate and read, and the sharing option is very useful. One pain point is that it is very easy to accidentally swipe between articles when scrolling down, this is made worse by the fact that swiping back to the original article takes you back to the top of that article.
Layout of articles on the iPhone needs addressing, long titles and subtitles overlap each other, affecting many articles.
Finally, there are far too many glaring typing mistakes - I sometimes wonder if any proofreading is going on, as they are all over the place, that said, many would be picked up with a simple spell checker.
I don't think it would take much effort to knock this into a five star app, but that effort really does need to be made.
The new app is much better than the old one. It is easy to navigate and read, however lots of typos. It still doesn't download automatically overnight, but I see this is a common issue.
My small criticisms about the content are that there is no TV guide, no sports results and the letter page appears to have shrunk. Also content gets repeated in different issues.
Overall I am pleased that I'm still able to read the Independent- having done so since it began. Once the criticisms I have raised (and which are also mentioned in many other reviews) this will be a 5 star app for what has also been a 5 star paper (if I can still call it that)!
