Ratings and Reviews
In for the long haul
Version 1 and 2 of this app were truly terrible, but slowly and surely the bugs have been squashed and the app is now elegant and reliable. There are no ads anymore, thank goodness.
The journalism is better than on the website, as there is much less click bait. The political stance of the paper is liberal-or-die. It isn't truly centrist, is quite partisan to its own beliefs, and so isn't dispassionately independent. But it is refreshing.
Sub-editing of headlines and news in brief has taken a turn for the worse in the last couple of weeks.
There are good writers, still. Tom Peck's sketch is often inspirational, there are proper leaders, and Simon Calder and other writers are very readable.
On big stories, there is often way too much duplication of content with journalists often writing exactly the same article again and again, which makes for a dull read. And there is an over-preponderance of food, travel and huge amounts of sport at the expense of features, culture and science. It would be nice to be able to jettison this chaff rather than have to wade through it.
The Editor needs to redress this imbalance before it gets five stars from this long-time reader of the print edition.

5* Content, limitations on older iPads
I have no complaints with the content and read thoroughly every day. Great, easy to use on a new device after struggling for a year or more on an older iPad 2 (16GB), comments below (and lack of 5th star) only apply to the smaller device.
The problem on the limited capacity device was that I had to delete eg Friday’s edition before downloading Saturday’s, and it needs 4-5 keystrokes to accomplish what should be a quick swipe. I only set auto delete to 7 days as I don’t know I’ve finished with an edition before the next one starts (and fails) to download. I also had to delete and reinstall the app monthly to overcome memory clutter, a one button means to do this would have been welcome.
Daily online news outlet
There are two aspects to this: how well does the app work; and what is the news content like.
In terms of app functionality, it is not perfect but pretty good. I have subscribed for almost two years now and many improvements have been made. Serious problems (download failure) on only two occasions, which were fixed quickly and courteously. Auto download does not seem to work for me. The contents page shows each article with a thumbnail. Easy navigation then to the article. You can also swipe through from one article to the next.
In terms of content it is much as the paper version used to be. Editorial bias is right wing Labour- Left Wing Conservative.
