Anyone who’s booked train tickets in the UK knows it can be a labyrinthine task. Am I buying off-peak tickets? What is off-peak? What is “super” off-peak? Am I getting the best deal? We were thrilled to have all this—and more—finally made clear as day by a souped-up Trainline app. It’s become as essential to our train travel as a fully charged phone battery.

E-ticket only ticket

Suddenly the option to collect tickets at the station has been effectively disabled. Even if you tick the option the e-ticket option remains highlighted and you still get sold an e-ticket. Train line help is dreadful, repeatedly refusing to issue a replacement paper ticket for me. Effectively they are forcing e-tickets on everyone.
E-tickets are great until you have an iPhone that goes flat all the time can’t afford to upgrade and the trains either have no power points or these are deliberately turned off or even boarded over so passengers cannot use them. It is pot luck if you will be able to charge the phone. I also have no access to a printer.
A very stupid upgrade by the developers, who think everyone can manage to or wants to keep up with ever more expensive technology, that has wrecked a very good app for me. There is no point in me using it anymore when National Rail App still lets you collect tickets at the station and does not charge extra for bookings like Trainline.

Developer Response ,

Hi there,

Because we think that etickets are the best, we are actively encouraging their use but we appreciate that there are not everyone. So there is a back up in place for our customers, which is to request a code to pick up paper tickets at the station. This can be done through your account online. If for some reason that isn't possible then our Customer Services should be able to do it for you. Could you get in touch with us via Twitter or Facebook with examples of when you weren't allowed to convert the booking over the phone so we can investigate? - Alisdair

Trains always cancelled

I’m about to delete this app and stop using Trainline. I travel the same route every couple of weeks and the last 4 or 5 trips the train I booked was cancelled on the day of travel for no reason (all other trains before and after are running). After calling the useless customer service centre (an Indian call centre) who have no clue what they’re doing other than repeating information I already know as in “catch the next train in an hour and you can claim compensation from the train company”. Having spoken to someone in the station ticket office and a person at GWR I’ve been informed that these phantom trains are a regular occurrence with Trainline. Apparently they take bookings for trains that don’t exist and don’t care that passengers end up overcrowded and with no seat reserved on the next train. Explains why I’ve had so many trains cancelled and why so many of the trains are overcrowded. Totally disgusting business practice. I’ll book direct with the train company from now on.
