Description

******* Iphone 5C and above now has WiFi calling without the need for this app, click here for info… http://bit.ly/2kNsZtn *****

Sometimes it’s difficult to get a good signal when you’re indoors. So we’ve created Three inTouch, the smart new app that lets you call and text whenever you’re on Wi-Fi, even if there’s no mobile signal.

You can use your Three number as normal – there’s no messing about with logins or passwords – and all calls and texts come out of your existing monthly price plan or Pay As You Go credit.

•Call and text whenever you’re on Wi-Fi, even where there’s no signal.
•Free App, just download and activate.
•No extra charges. Calls and texts come from your monthly price plan or Pay As You Go credit.
•Make and receive calls using your normal Three number to anyone on any network.

The simple-to-use Three inTouch app is offered free to all our Contract, SIM and Pay As You Go customers. It’s so easy to activate and use. Just download the Three inTouch app onto your iPhone and you’ll stay connected whenever you have Wi-Fi.

Fatally flawed but still has its uses

Three in touch can be useful if your mobile signal has deteriorated to the point of unusability (thanks to 3/EE switching off our local phone mast). However, the app runs entirely separately from the phone so call histories, messages etc in one do not appear in the other and vice versa.
This means messages and missed calls etc can easily be overlooked when they only appear in three in touch (I could abbreviate the name, but I fear my post might be pulled...) - then, some days later, when a weak mobile signal momentarily is re-established, messages that appeared in three in touch appear on your iOS messages app.
Another major flaw in the app: say you have a missed call on your iPhone from some unknown number that you want to dial in three in touch-you can copy this number from iOS, but you can't then paste it into three in touch directly-you have to create a contact for it, or write it down on paper and then dial it in manually.
For a while now iOS has had the capability to do Wi-Fi calling built-in to the system phone app - all 3 needs to do is switch it on. Why on earth they don't do this instead of pushing this app on their users I don't know.

Has become useless half the time

Recently I have found that it always seems to need activation whenever I most need it. Activation requires you to turn off wifi and be connected to the Three network with data. Of course if I was connected to the network I would not need the app in the first place! After all the purpose of it is for places with no reception. So, I jump in the car and drive till I have reception or go off on foot in the rain, set it up and then it works. Great. But then a few days later it says it needs activation again, then again, then again. Presumably every time there is an update I have to go through this procedure. ...rendering is unreliable and useless half the time! Luckily the iPhone 6s onwards has proper built in Wifi Calling so does not need this app.

Doesn't work - and doesn't use PushKit

This app just doesn't work for me. Calls and texts don't come through. It's not reliable at all.

The app seems to rely on running in the background to maintain a connection to Three servers. This seems apparent from at least a couple of things I've noticed:
1) it racks up a lot of background time in the iOS Settings>Battery section.
2) it has a setting in order to stay alive.

This approach is no longer needed by VoIP apps on iOS- which is what this app is, essentially. PushKit allows apps to be woken by notifications in a consistent and reliable way. The app can stop running between texts and calls. The app doesn't need to maintain its own connection to Three servers. Instead it reuses the existing connection to Apple servers that all apps with notifications use. This is maintained by the operating system.

Here's how it could work: When Three remotely handles an incoming call or text for your number, it can send a notification via Apple to your phone. This notification is guaranteed to wake up the inTouch app, and display a notification according to your preferences. It will always work.

Three really need to adopt this method.

Furthermore it should also adopt the recent improvement to VoIP apps on iOS, which is to use the native incoming call screen.
