TomTom apps have become so rubbish

After having a number of tomtom go sat navs I bought a TomTom Rider 1 and that was great for a number of years then it simply stopped working so I bought a Rider 2 and it has served me well for many years. Just lately I heard of the Rider 550 with live lifetime maps and lifetime speed cameras (info is totally reliant on using my phone linked to TomTom MyDrive so I blew £500 on the upgrade. Thats where this app comes in, on its own works great on the phone but when trying to connect device it fails badly I deleted app and reinstalled but same again I cannot load trips or devised routes the app is real rubbish and will not perform as described.
I am deleting the app and returning my new Rider 550 and going back to my old none internet connected Rider 2 which is much better and doesn’t cost £500.
And for those interested in the TomTom 550 advertising lifetime maps and speed cameras. If you subscribe as I did and it says as mine does ‘subscriptions Lifetime’ Just press on the little square box at the top right on the screen when in menu mode you will find your lifetime subscription only lasts for five (5) years from purchase- to me thats not lifetime.
Overall everything to do with latest TomTom are rubbish. Either buy an older one not reliant on internet or by a Garmin because their lifetime maps are really lifetime (well as long as they supply updates for each model)
Like I said the app is also crap.

Hi there Keo

Sorry to hear that you have returned your device and are no longer using the MyDrive app. It sounds like you've had a frustrating time.

Just so you know, when we assign maps, there needs to be an end date in order for the device to function. So as standard we put either 5 years or 10 years on devices. If the unit is still functioning and supported after this time, then we can extend that subscription.

Wobbly rider ,

A disappointment. Update I’ve added stars because new version is much easier to see!

I am a chauffeur. Multi drops/ pickups at stupid hours.

I’ve been loyal TomTom customer since PBS’s have been “a thing”.

Upgraded to a 620 following press coverage that TT declaring older units (with lifetime everything) as obsolete.. (lifetime means only for as long as TT provide them support, apparently, rather than what we might think lifetime means).

Anyway. This App. Connects phone to 620 relatively painlessly. If you are doing this note that - whilst the 620 is connected to your Wi-fi, the phone connection ALWAYS shows not connected to data. It’s fine when out of Wi-fi range.. took me a long while to work that out.

Using the App. I am long in the tooth. The maps are fairly tiny and resistant to being zoomed in on.

If I actually find places and routes I want to take, I CAN send easily to my sat nav

The biggest problem? The search seems to be worldwide. It doesn’t include POI’s (my places) that are known to my system. I can’t find hotels that I know exist. If search by postcode, great, but then I can’t see how to narrow down by street or house number. If search by street it’s a lottery and goes worldwide.

The theory is good. But I am really disappointed that this upgrade hasn’t made my life easier.

Developer Response ,

Hi there, thanks for taking time to write a review.

Yes, the app will search the address 'worldwide', but by entering the country code will bring up the address in that specific country.

I hope this helps!

We will pass your feedback to our product team - so many thanks!

Safe Travels, Cheers, Becky@TomTom

Evil Spud ,

It's got fractionally better, still pretty useless

So the previous version was hopeless, couldn't actually do postcodes, meaning a postcode search could get you somewhere within 15 miles out in the country.

Now they've updated the maps, and I've still yet to try the postcode function properly. But the noticeable change is the maps. When you zoom in to look at a town or village, you can see there's a built up area. But you don't know where you're looking at because no label telling you the town name shows up. Just many many signs telling you the road number.

Said it on my last review, and it still stands. Tomtom is essentially a software company that does mapping and navigation as its main thing, so it's pretty embarrassing they can't get the mapping right on their app. Maybe version 3 they'll crack this problem.

Developer Response ,

Hi there!

Thanks for leaving this review. I'm glad the app is getting better and better each time for you, but I'm sorry to see parts of the app have left you feeling frustrated.

I will certainly feed back your comments to our developers - as you say, hopefully third time lucky in this case.

Sorry for the inconvenience so far - your patience is appreciated.
