“I use this app on a weekly basis and it is by far the best app available for accurate train departure times. Easy layout and extremely useful.”
“I’ve been using the app for about 2 years now and find it invaluable. Never had a problem. Even better with etickets. I live rurally and the train is the only method of transport for me unless I drive. The app makes train travel so much easier for me.”

Done and dusted
Tickets with long expiry dates can still hang around in ‘My Tickets’ once you’ve used them. But now, if you like, you can mark tickets as ‘used’, to avoid mix-ups and keep things neat. Tap ‘Manage my booking’ then ‘Mark as used’ and it’ll free up space for your upcoming trips.
Butter fingers? Fret not, you can unmark any accidentally marked tickets, so long as they’re still valid.
Say goodbye to ticket machine queues, as you can now use etickets to travel on all South Western Railway routes that both depart and arrive outside of London – that’s over 1,500 stations! Search your journey, choose an eticket and whoosh, it’ll be zapped straight to your phone for you to scan at the barrier.
City dwellers, never fear – London stations in the SWR network will soon accept etickets too.
Have a safe and pleasant journey.
Ratings and Reviews
Anyone who’s booked train tickets in the UK knows it can be a labyrinthine task. Am I buying off-peak tickets? What is off-peak? What is “super” off-peak? Am I getting the best deal? We were thrilled to have all this—and more—finally made clear as day by a souped-up Trainline app. It’s become as essential to our train travel as a fully charged phone battery.
Not the flexible option I had hoped
I prefer the National Rail app for planning train journeys and for live train times. Trainline is the only way I’ve found of obtaining an e-ticket to use on your smartphone to avoid queuing to collect pre-purchased tickets.
I was looking for an alternative to a season ticket as I don’t commute every day. It looked like I could change the date of an e-ticket, thinking this would allow me to buy a batch of tickets in advance and move non-commuting days at the last minute. Firstly, in the app it is only possible to buy a single journey at a time, however the web page allows multiple journeys to be bought in one transaction. (Tickets bought on the web page can be seen and used in the app). Then when I came to change the date of a ticket, the functionality didn’t exist in the app anymore and had been removed from the web page necessitating a phone call whereupon I found out that I was not allowed to change the date of an Anytime Day Return even BEFORE downloading and activating. My only option was to cancel the ticket attracting a £10 cancellation charge over the phone call or £3 charge using the app.
So in short, the app gives an easy way to buy and use paperless tickets using your phone but flexibility to manage tickets depends hugely on the ticket type and is currently fluid functionality.
Atrocious customer service
I used Trainline to make a Eurostar booking from London to Paris. Some time after making the booking, I realized I needed to change my date of travel. The Eurostar website advised me that because I bought through a third-party vendor, I had to make my changes through the vendor. I called up Trainline, who told me they couldn’t make the change, and gave me a number for Eurostar. I called Eurostar, who reiterated the advice on their website, so I called Trainline back and spoke to a different agent, who told me to make another booking for my desired travel times, and when I had done that, to call back and they would refund my original booking, less the £30 change fee. As advised, I made a new booking, and immediately called Trainline again to secure my refund. This time, the agent I spoke to told me I had been poorly advised, and that no refund could be made. He told me to call Eurostar. I explained that I had already tried that route. After a long conversation and a very long time on hold, he told me that he had escalated the issue to his manager, that I would get an email very shortly, and that a manager would call me within five business days to resolve the issue. The requisite five business days have passed. I have not received any emails, nor have any managers called me.
UPDATE: Trainline resolved the situation and refunded me.
Hello, thanks for taking the time to post your review. We’re disappointed to learn of your recent experience and are keen to investigate and provide a resolution. If we’ve previously promised a refund, we’ll certainly ensure this is honoured. As this is a public review site however, could you please contact us via a more secure channel to provide booking details (our email address is firstname.lastname@example.org). If you let us know once this has been sent and your name, we can locate your correspondence and handle as a priority. Many thanks.
