Ratings and Reviews
Anyone who’s booked train tickets in the UK knows it can be a labyrinthine task. Am I buying off-peak tickets? What is off-peak? What is “super” off-peak? Am I getting the best deal? We were thrilled to have all this—and more—finally made clear as day by a souped-up Trainline app. It’s become as essential to our train travel as a fully charged phone battery.
Not the flexible option I had hoped
I prefer the National Rail app for planning train journeys and for live train times. Trainline is the only way I’ve found of obtaining an e-ticket to use on your smartphone to avoid queuing to collect pre-purchased tickets.
I was looking for an alternative to a season ticket as I don’t commute every day. It looked like I could change the date of an e-ticket, thinking this would allow me to buy a batch of tickets in advance and move non-commuting days at the last minute. Firstly, in the app it is only possible to buy a single journey at a time, however the web page allows multiple journeys to be bought in one transaction. (Tickets bought on the web page can be seen and used in the app). Then when I came to change the date of a ticket, the functionality didn’t exist in the app anymore and had been removed from the web page necessitating a phone call whereupon I found out that I was not allowed to change the date of an Anytime Day Return even BEFORE downloading and activating. My only option was to cancel the ticket attracting a £10 cancellation charge over the phone call or £3 charge using the app.
So in short, the app gives an easy way to buy and use paperless tickets using your phone but flexibility to manage tickets depends hugely on the ticket type and is currently fluid functionality.
Incorrect timetable info!
I would recommend using other train apps such as Scotrail (if you’re in Scotland like me, not sure what the equivalent ones are in other parts of the UK). This one didn’t have the right timetable information, it said there was a train at 00:26 on a Saturday night from Glasgow to Edinburgh but when I arrived at the station the conductor told me this was never a service! He was shocked and thought it was really unacceptable the app published that information. I then had to wait for an hour at Glasgow bus station, alone, until half 1 in the morning - which wasn’t the evening I’d hoped for to say the least. I phoned customer service and they told me “sometimes there are mistakes”, so I don’t really see the point of the app?! Booking tickets through other, similar apps with accurate timetables seems like the better option. All in all; awful service and would be better to support other free apps that care more about their users.
