Triggertrap - Creative ways of triggering your camera. The Triggertrap Mobile app has a heap of sensors to trigger your camera in exciting ways and a range of tools to create beautiful timelapses.
Triggertrap Mobile’s sensor modes are configurable so you can get trigger happy with your camera - any way you like! Triggertrap Mobile allows extreme exposure control, and you can push the limits of HDR photography.
IMPORTANT! Triggertrap requires the Triggertrap Mobile Dongle to connect your camera to your device! See below for details.
• "A nifty addition to any photographer’s toolkit" - Trusted Reviews • "[Combines] the capabilities of several expensive camera accessories into a single, affordable product.\” - Shutterbug
Got an Apple Watch or a Pebble Smartwatch? We've got you covered! Wearables works with five of our most popular modes: Simple Cable Release, Self Timer, Press and Lock, Timed Release, and Timelapse.
Here are all the ways you can get triggering:
Sensor modes: • Sound sensor - clap, whistle or tap • Vibration sensor - vibrations and earthquakes • Motion sensor - detects movement. Catch people with their hand in the cookie jar! • Peekaboo - facial recognition
Timelapse modes: • Timelapse - travel through time • TimeWarp - timelapse with acceleration • DistanceLapse - perfect for road trips • Bramping - bulb ramping timelapse to keep your exposure smooth • Star Trail mode - extreme exposure control to create stunning images of the night sky
HDR modes: • LE HDR - Long exposure HDR sets with up to 19 exposures • LE HDR Timelapse - create timelapses with all the detail of HDR
Along with all of these, there are a variety of other cable release modes, including Simple Cable Release, Self Timer and Press and Lock options, and timed exposures up to 100 hours long! We also have a handy Solar Calculator to find out the sunrise and sunset times wherever you are, and an ND Calculator to ensure your exposures are just the right length when using neutral density filters.
To connect your iOS device to your camera buy a Triggertrap Mobile Dongle separately. See the Triggertrap website for a list of supported cameras, and for more information. Currently more than 300 camera models are supported, with support added for new cameras all the time.
Long Exposure HDR (LE-HDR) mode supports shutter speeds from several hours down to 1/15th second, and can do up to 19 bracketed shots with 1/3, 1/2, 1 or 2 EV steps.
What’s New
Version History
4.1.7
Continued performance improvements and updates to the UI, fixing issues when using the app in landscape orientation - especially for the iPhone X, XS and XR.
Enjoy ~ Alex & Ross.
4.1.6
This update resolves a critical issue introduced in the previous release (4.1.5). Some users had reported timelapse and bulb modes not triggering as expected. If you find any other problems, please reach out and let us know.
Enjoy ~ Alex & Ross.
4.1.5
We've continued with improvements for iPhone X users, fixing some of the design issues, improving the style of night mode and squashing some minor bugs.
Enjoy ~ Alex & Ross.
4.1.4
We have taken steps to make Triggertrap Mobile compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and we've made a few minor adjustments along the way.
We no longer track any of your data inside of the app, nothing at all - and to ensure we're fully compliant to the rules; all of our previous third-party services or accounts have been deleted. This means that we've deleted all of the historical data that we'd previously gathered too.
As well as preparing for GDPR, we've fixed the broken feedback and support page, removed all references to the Triggertrap shop, and updated the Cable Selector to find Mobile Kits on eBay. We've also made a few improvements for iPhone X users, and we'll aim to make the app silky-smooth for the iPhone X in the next update.
Enjoy ~ Alex & Ross.
4.1.3
It's been a (long) while since the last update, and thanks to Alex Taffe - a very kind member of the Open Source community, Triggertrap has been updated to support iOS 11 and the iPhone X. We hope you enjoy the update.
4.1.2
- Resolved an issue where some Pebble users were unable to use Wearables mode. - General bug fixes and performance enhancements.
4.1.1
Bug fixes and performance improvements.
4.1
All new, all shiny, still red - Triggertrap Mobile 4.0. We’ve completely rewritten the core of our app to improve speed, efficiency, and accuracy. We find those things pretty exciting, but we’ve also been beavering away on new features, including the single most requested feature: night mode.
To turn Triggertrap Mobile into the perfect companion for photography in the dark, a simple switch lives in the settings section of the app. The colours have been chosen to be subtle yet clear in darkness, and not dazzle you when you use the app, making it ideal for high speed photography in studios, light painting in the garden, and for astrophotography in the field. These colours are designed to work with the screen brightness turned right down, minimising light coming out the phone, and maximising battery life.
But we’ve not just painted it black. Wearables mode has been taken to the next level, with support for every mode except Press and Hold and Quick Release. This makes it perfect for starting sensor modes from a distance so you don’t accidentally trigger them yourself, keeping your long exposure HDRs sharp and your star trails steady.
Also, a little something for ND Filter lovers - Timed Release now has our ND Calculator baked right in. In Timed Release simply tap the ND filter icon (the split circle), enter your base shutter speed, your neutral density filter strength and tap to automatically put that value into Timed Release. No more forgotten shutter speeds and fewer taps and swipes. Easy!
To make sure Timed Release and ND Calculator work reliably together, we have limited the fastest shutter speed to 1/6th second. For anything faster we recommend setting the shutter speed on your camera and using Triggertrap as a cable release.
Another little tweak to tell you about is for our iOS 9 users, who can now use Spotlight to open features inside the app. Swipe left (or down) on the home screen, type the mode you’re after, and you can be teleported straight in!
As ever, our bug-crush shoes have also been out in force, stamping out bugs far too numerous (and boring) to mention here.
Any feedback or suggestions? We love to hear what you think, please send us an email to hello@tri.gg to let us know!

iOS 9 is here, and we’re ready for it. We’ve brought everything up to date behind the scenes, blasting bugs and crushing crashes. For those of you with iPads, we’ve also ensured the app plays nicely with side-by-side multitasking - perfect for checking out a Triggertrap How To tutorial while setting up the Triggertrap App!
We’ve also added a nifty Bulb icon in the corner of the app as a little reminder of when your camera needs to be in Bulb mode.
Any feedback or suggestions? We love to hear what you think, please send us an email to hello@tri.gg to let us know!
3.3.3
In fixing a Permissions bug, we accidentally introduced a bug with the Sound Sensor on iOS 7. Sorry about that!
3.3.2
An update for everyone with a sharp eye for detail, with a whole heap of bugs squashed and inconsistencies resolved.
Want the details? Here you go:
• Timelapse, Self Timer and Timed Release time inputs on iPads no longer go for a walk to the bottom of the screen. • The Timelapse circular animation now doesn’t fall out of sync after several trips around the ring. • The page dots on the Tutorial screen now don’t get ahead of themselves, and always reflect where you are in the Tutorial. • Removed a low volume warning when turning on Wi-Fi Master because it doesn’t need it, and it saves you an extra tap. • The Options page banner had a very slightly different shade of red in the top bar. Embarrassingly, that was the shade of red we went when we noticed. • Fixed an ugly crash when a Timelapse interval was shorter than the pulse length in settings. The steps to reproduce this were quite complicated, but we really hate crashes. • Fix for privacy permissions in DistanceLapse. This makes sure you’re asked if you want to enable Location Services, rather than it defaulting to “No”, which was strange. • Sound Sensor now realises if it can’t hear anything, and offers advice if the microphone access has been denied. • Invisibility option added and then removed. We lost some devices during the testing of this feature. • Wi-Fi Slave text no longer goes missing after a very specific chain of taps. • Dismissing the Low Volume warning with an upwards swipe hid the status bar - now it restores the Status Bar to its rightful place after displaying the warning. • New Feedback and Support form icon because duplicate icons are no fun. • All in-app images now follow a naming convention. ModeNameDescription.Filetype, in case you were wondering. • General code improvements to keep the app bang up to date with Apple guidelines.
Any feedback or suggestions? We love to hear what you think, please drop us an email to hello@tri.gg to let us know!
3.3.1
Powered by delirious excitement, we’ve been busy on our first update to our new Wearables mode–Apple Watch triggering has landed!
We’ve created an Apple Watch app that we think is perfect for photographers, super clean and simple, and free of distractions and complications. Alongside the familiar big red button there’s an easy to use delay option that’s perfect for allowing photographers time to get in position (wherever that might be!) before the exposure starts. The Apple Watch has a whole host of great features, and we’ve got some big plans, so keep an eye out for those in future updates.
Wearables works with five of our most popular modes: Simple Cable Release, Self Timer, Press and Lock, Timed Release, and Timelapse. Simply download this update, install the Triggertrap app on your Apple Watch, and you’re set for some wrist-based triggering.
It couldn’t be easier to use; all you need to do is open Wearables and tap the red button to start, then navigate to a mode which is compatible with Wearables, and you’re ready to go! The big red button on the Apple Watch behaves just like it does in the app; you press it to start, and press it to stop!
Any feedback or suggestions? We love to hear what you think, please drop us an email to hello@tri.gg to let us know!

Stop. Trigger Time. We’re super excited about the new smartwatches that have been arriving on the scene, and in our never-ending quest to help photographers take sharper photos, we’ve been beavering away on a new Wearables mode!
Our Wearables mode is currently compatible with Pebble smartwatches, and works with five of our most popular modes: Simple Cable Release, Self Timer, Press and Lock, Timed Release, and Timelapse. Simply download this update, grab the Triggertrap app over on the Pebble Store, get your watch paired with your phone, and you’re set for some wrist-based triggering.
It couldn’t be easier to use; all you need to do is fire up the Wearables mode and tap the red button to start, then navigate to a mode which is compatible with Wearables, and you’re ready to go. The Pebble app behaves just like the Big Red Button–you press it to start, and press it to stop!
We’ve also created an all-new Inspiration page, highlighting some beautiful photographs powered by Triggertrap Mobile. We absolutely love seeing and sharing what you guys create with Triggertrap, so check out the Inspiration page for all the ways you can get involved in showing off your awesome photographs.
As ever we love to hear what you think, if you have any feedback or suggestions, please drop us an email to hello@tri.gg
3.2.1
With spring around the corner for us, we've been giving the app a good spring clean; fixing bugs and tidying code.
Did you ever wonder why DistanceLapse didn’t take a photograph straight away when you pressed the red button, but all the other Timelapse modes did? So did we, so now it does take a photo at the start. There were a couple of unused images hiding in the app, which we’ve kicked out to make the app smaller, so you can download it faster.
Some other fixes include an issue for users who still were on iOS 8.0 had a nasty crashing problem when opening Settings. For users of every iOS flavour, we’ve fixed the status bar vanishing if the Low Volume warning appeared twice in quick succession, text vanishing from Wi-Fi Slave if you opened the Settings, and a landscape-iPad-specific bug on the Tutorial, where the red button flew to the side of the screen for no reason on the final page. There’s also a new, secret mode for anyone who has read this far through these bug notes. Just kidding, that would be awesome though.
We love to hear what you think, if you have any feedback or suggestions, please drop us an email to hello@tri.gg
3.2
We’ve created a super handy, all-new tutorial, welcoming new users to Triggertrap Mobile with all the info they need to get started. This will appear the next time you open the app - check it out! If you’re already a Triggertrap Expert, you can click the little X in the top right corner to skip past it.
The fonts have had a small tweak to look better across all Apple devices. From iPods to iPads, the text is cleaner, easier to read, and makes better use of the screen space. Lovely.
We’ve also worked on a few bug fixes; you may have noticed in DistanceLapse the camera was triggering at the right point, but was showing speeds that weren’t very accurate. We’ve had a word with the calculator, and all is well again in DistanceLapse.
A few users noticed that their devices didn’t want to play nicely in Wi-Fi mode when using Personal Hotspot. We’ve changed the way the app checks for Wi-Fi, so it’s now fantastically easy to use Wi-Fi Master and Slave over a Personal Hotspot.
We love to hear what you think. If you have any feedback or suggestions, please drop us an email on hello@tri.gg!
3.1.3
Fixes an issue affecting some iPhone 4, iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini 3 users.
3.1.2
A couple of wintery bug fixes!
3.1.1
Bug fixes, and performance enhancements on the iPhone 4.
3.1
Solar Calculator and Wi-Fi triggering are back! We’ve also made a few tweaks to the usability, and removed a few little bugs too.
The app has rediscovered its ability to speak German and has learned a bit of Italian too; piacere di conoscerti!
3.0
Rebuilt from the ground up, welcome to Triggertrap Mobile 3.0 for iOS! With the dawn of iOS 8, we’ve made huge changes behind the scenes on the app, making it faster and more responsive than ever before, whilst keeping a familiar look for the modes you know and love. Now playing nicely with the newest iPhones, and with greatly improved iPad support, we’ve made navigating the app even easier with an improved sidebar. And as a bonus feature, the app now works with your phone upside down!
Wi-Fi triggering and Solar Calculator haven't made it in to this release, but please bear with us, they'll be back soon! German translation of the app is underway, and will also be back soon!
2.6
We’re unleashing a triumvirate of great new features in this update! First up, a couple of smashing Cable Release Modes. We’ve got a Self-Timer mode for all you selfie addicts and photobooth enthusiasts, and a Quick Release mode for when you can’t afford to take your eyes off the subject. The Self-Timer couldn’t be any easier - tap in your desired delay, then hit the big red button! To use Quick Release mode, hold the button down, then release when you want the photo to be taken - perfect for posing models and waiting for just the right expression - or if you’re waiting for the planets to align through your telescope!
2.5
Let’s do the time warp again! Our main feature in this update is going graphical with our TimeWarp mode. No more deciphering quads, cubics and sines - now you draw the time curve yourself. Tapping on the clock will give you a nifty preview of how the acceleration will look, and the graph draws handy overlap detection so you know if you need to tinker with your settings to get the perfect TimeWarp.
As well as the great new features, our bug squash shoes have come down on bugs in the app. A few handy UI tweaks should make using Triggertrap Mobile more silky smooth than ever before too.
2.4
In this update we’re unleashing our Solar Calculator! Oh yes. This handy calculator works out where you are in the world, and instantly shows you the times for local sunrise and sunset. It’s so smart it tells you the times of first and last light too, helping you create sumptuous timelapses.
We’ve also increased the size of photos taken with the internal camera, so now when you’re shooting with your iOS device it will take photos that are 1920x1080, perfect for full HD timelapses.
Finally, for those of you with high attention to detail, you can now wave goodbye to the niggling little bugbears that have been killing your vibes. In this release we have corrected certain interface errors that collectively should make for a much smoother user experience, including better functioning counter labels and better behaved Wi-Fi modes. Wave goodbye to annoying crashes, and enjoy!
2.3
2.3 Triggertrap Mobile’s ears are pricked up, poised, and ready for action!
There were some unexpected side effects to our app when iOS 7.1 launched, but our coding crew were conjuring fixes faster than you could say Peekaboo. This update should fix all crashes and issues that were reported in connection to iOS 7.1. Why weren’t we able to release these fixes to you right away, you ask? When 7.1 launched, we were in the process of bravely going back to the drawing board with our triggering modes. It sounds mad, we know, but it was totally worth it. Triggertrap Mobile should now be more responsive than ever, making it faster to react and generally more intuitive. Peekaboo mode is now ninja fast and LE HDR is way more reliable. On top of that, we’ve made accessing Wi-Fi mode faster. Pressing the Wi-Fi icon in your chosen mode will turn on Wi-Fi Master without you having to exit to the menu. Oh, and one more thing. TimeWarp mode will now notify you if you have overlapping exposures so that you don’t get any nasty surprises later. Pretty useful, right?
2.2
2.2 Hold on tight - Motion returns to Triggertrap!
On and on we go - reintroducing the modes that everyone loved in Triggertrap Mobile 1.0 to our latest and greatest version. This time it’s the turn of the Motion Sensor; triggering your camera or flash any time that motion is detected by the internal camera on your iOS device. Why not have a play with it now? It’s great for wildlife and camera-trap photography, but we’re sure there are loads more creative ways you can think of to use it!
2.1.3 A stocking full of festive fixes from Triggertrap!
So, is everyone ready for the holidays? All shopping done, food prepared and decorations up? No, us neither! This can be a stressful time of year, so the last thing you need is to be worried about how well your favourite camera-triggering app is working. The good news is, our crack team of code-conjurors are on the case! This latest update improves labels and controls throughout the app that use numbers, making them even better at handling even the biggest numbers correctly. It also features fixes for the Wi-Fi Slave/Master modes which should improve usability for fans of wireless triggering everywhere. Until next time, have a great festive season everyone, and the happiest of new years to come!
Version 4.1.7
Continued performance improvements and updates to the UI, fixing issues when using the app in landscape orientation - especially for the iPhone X, XS and XR.
Enjoy ~ Alex & Ross.

Simply superb bit of photo kit. Clear, concise, fun, smart and a tool you'll grow to love with time. Great for Astro pics and time lapse shots. Please however Apple, recognise this as an audio app as it relies upon Audio signals to operate (via cable into headphone socket). You'll need the dongle kit hardware to run via dslr.
Great app, no ads, never crashed on me yet.
