TunnelBear VPN is a free, incredibly simple app to browse the Internet privately and securely.

The beautiful TunnelBear app protects your online privacy, lets you access your favourite websites & apps, and secures your connection on public WiFi hotspots.

Try TunnelBear for free with 500MB of browsing data every month. No credit card required. In-app purchases available for premium plans, which give you unlimited data.

Put simply, by using TunnelBear, you can browse from anywhere with peace of mind knowing that your online activity is more private from hackers, ISPs, and advertisers.

TunnelBear VPN for iOS is a really simple app that encrypts your web browsing and data (making it unreadable) as it leaves your iPad or iPhone. It makes public Wi-Fi safe and secure, and also keeps your browsing private from ISPs. Websites and advertisers will have a more difficult time tracking your physical location and browsing across the Internet.

Your browsing habits are personal and shouldn’t be trusted to just anyone. TunnelBear is proud to be the first and only VPN service in the world that has been independently audited by a 3rd party. You can feel confident that we deliver on our promise to secure your data.

One-tap connect: App so simple, a bear could use it.
A VPN you can trust: Along with a strict no-logging policy, we’re the only consumer VPN app to have completed a 3rd party, public security audit.
Global VPN network: With servers in 22+ countries and lightning-fast speeds, access the websites and apps you love. Anytime, anywhere.
Grizzly-grade security: TunnelBear uses strong AES-256 bit encryption by default. Weaker encryption isn’t even an option.
No logging. Your browsing stays private.

What's New

Version 2.10

We’ve received reports of unruly Bears acting up in some parts of the app, so we’ve spent some time going back over the pandamentals.

• Fixed an issue where Bears could fail to tunnel after switching protocols
Performed various thought experiments on Bears to explore the various philosophical dimensions of trust. The results are:
• Bears will remain more stable (emotionally and physically) when managing Trusted Networks
• Bears will better inform you when turning off your VPN when not connected to a Trusted Network.
Our Banner Bears took a spa day, had some pampering and came back refreshed and relaxed.
• The Bear offering bonus data has a fabulous new look
• The Bears that announce when you’re out of data now arrive one at a time
• Tunnel holes no longer disappear when in Auto mode
• Bonus data now displays correctly
• VPN toggle now switches to “OFF” when there’s no internet connection
• Server info now displays correctly on iOS 10

Progressively gotten worse, poor reliability.

TunnelBear has gradually gotten worse over the last 3.5 years.
The application for the iPhone has become evermore unstable, dropped connection, not connecting to country or just not responding at all.
The desktop app was ok, but that has also stated to perform in a terribly familiar fashion as the mobile app. Often the application will tell you it’s connected to required country, but opening application that requires different country or running basic speed test shows that it’s not actually connected to the chosen country.
The mobile application often required a ‘kill and restart’ sometimes several times before it actually makes the connect. External applications have also started to recognise when tunnelbear is in use and blocks connection. Defeats the purpose of the app. The recent price increase and service being provided by tunnel bear is not proportional.

Rawr! Sorry for the trouble connecting or remaining connected. Can you get in touch with our support bears at We’ll troubleshoot the issue further!

6-35% drop in Wi-Fi and 4G speed using TunnelBear

Been using TunnelBear VPN for a month now, on my iPad 10.5 and iPhone 7 Plus, I find the drop in D/L speed Mbps is around 6% on home BT wifi(35Mbps down to 33Mbps), and on EE 4G it’s 35% slower(37Mbps down to 24Mbps). These can vary tho but I’ve done a handful of tests before writing this to get an average. For every day use it’s not really noticeable the drop in speed pages load up at so I’m happy.
The losing a star is for 2 things.
First, Netflix will throw up an error and refuse to stream with TunnelBear VPN on, you have to switch it off. No getting around it, Netflix refuses to work.
Second issue is using google, it will ask you to verify by clicking on the squares in a picture showing a car/signpost etc to verify your not a robot, very annoying and time consuming process.
Common to all VPN’s? I don’t know....
Also to add that if you try the free version despite the promise of 1gb free data if u tweet them, they don’t respond. You have to go into ur online account to message them as whoever handles their twitter account has yet to respond to any of my tweets for free data like they promise. Annoying rather than deal breaking.

Good but not 100% reliable

Really enjoy using tunnelbear when it works. Nice app, simple to use, bear puns are often amusing and light-hearted.

However, I'll quite often find that it will just stop sending any data after a while, turning off and on again sometimes fixes the issue but not always. Perhaps a indicator of the speeds of each country would be useful, so I know if the country is slow, or whether I have some other issue? I don't know whether this is an iOS issue or a Tunnelbear one.

Noticed the map in the app goes a bit funny sometimes (missing tiles when connected). Also noticed the developers have fallen into the trap of having a 0:0 lat/long somewhere, so the app locates me in the sea off the side of Africa sometimes :-)
