Upwords
My sister-in-law and I have been playing online since 2012 and are still very keen. It’s a fascinating game in which every move is a problem to be solved. The meanings of the words are immaterial and, unlike Scrabble, all letters have the same value. Filling in and building upwards are the necessary strategies. We are both very annoyed by the latest update which has considerably lengthened the time between playing one game and being able to move on to the next. (We play 5 games with each other and another 5 with other people).
The letter distribution wrecks the game
I love Upwords and have been playing it for 23 years. The board game obviously and then through this App and am in a league as well. I love playing but when you play competitively the letter distribution becomes crucial. I have commented frequently to the developers that there is a serious flaw in the random distribution of letters. Their response is that it mimics the board game. This isn’t true. I have never gone 10 rounds of the board game without finding a vowel nor have I ever played the board game and not had an S the whole game while my opponent gets them all. You cannot win against someone who gets all of the S’s, D’S and E’s.
I think it would be much better if the letters were evenly split into two pots the minute the game starts and then each player gets letters randomly from their own pot throughout the game. The game then becomes one of skill rather than one based on a lot of luck plus some skill. It makes me want to quit playing as it is so frustrating. At the moment I play around 8 people a day. Many of us feel that the luck factor makes the game frustrating and less challenging.
Compulsive play
SO addicted to this game. OK, so I agree with other reviews that some words are outlandish and questionable, but after many years of playing scrabble type games from as far back as Sinclair spectrum ,I realise that there are millions of obsolete words out there just waiting to be re-discovered. This game is able to give me a challenge without being able to beat me every time thanks to different levels, and it has to be said that after just a couple of days of freezing,I’m very relieved the problems appear to have been sorted...I play an average of 2-3 hours a day ( I’m happily retired). Fast play and clean appearance without flashing distractions earn this game top marks.

Got a free dictionary for 20 uses in conjunction with this game, and FOUR out of the 20 placed by virtual opponent were NOT in the dictionary! Don’t bother with paying for it…your chances of winning the games will not be enhanced.
