Editors' Choice

Wikipedia is terrific: it’s armed us with countless life-saving nuggets of information. This app takes all that priceless information and spruces up each page with its own bespoke design. Essentially, it provides Wikipedia with a handsome filter. You simply search for whatever you’re interested in. Our favourite feature, however? The way it uses GPS to pinpoint your location on an interactive map and offer up a handful of useful and interesting places for you to read about.

UI is nice, but not perfect

The UI is polished which is appreciated, but the app is let down by poor discoverability. For instance, I’m in the U.K. and the Most Viewed section pulls up an inordinate amount of articles related to India. This can lead to a whole list of articles about Bollywood actors and Indian politicians when even a basic analysis of articles I have read would have filtered this out based on my general interests. If a Most Viewed algorithm is too much to ask, then at least allow us to have Most Viewed for region or specified countries (for instance, for me UK & US Most Viewed would be really helpful).

In the end the app is good if you know what information you’re looking for. Not so good if you’re wanting to browse and discover articles about issues that may be relevant to you.

Developer Response

Thanks for your review! Glad you like our polished UI.

We appreciate your feedback on discoverability with the Most Read feature. To clarify: What you see in the Most Read view is official statistical data from Wikipedia’s servers. Unfortunately, this data is based on the user’s selected language only and cannot be filtered by region. To protect our customers’ privacy, we do not track which articles they read or how they use our app, so we do not have data to generate Most Read statistics ourselves.

Since you enjoy discovering content: Have you tried the Nearby map feature? It is a fun way to discover articles about places in your own neighbourhood. You can also pan the map and tap anywhere else to search around different locations.

If you have any other questions or feedback that you’d like to share with us, feel free to contact us on Twitter or via email. Thanks.

Great Replacement for Articles

I used Articles for years after the developer ceased updating it because it was, IMO, the best Wikipedia app out there. I finally made the jump to Viki a few months ago and I’m very please with it. With the recent addition of in-article text search, I’ve finally retired Articles completely and I’m happy to give Viki 5 stars.
