I have been using the East Coast Mainline for 25 years and would consider myself tech savvy.
I saw the option to get the ticket on my mobile like other TOCs offer. The link on the DESKTOP site to download the app takes you to a description on the MOBILE app. Not thwarted by that I went to the App Store to download it. Within the desktop site, where I was buying my ticket there was an option to initiate the app on my phone. I logged in on my phone. Then pressed the button to initiate the app. Several clicks and several blank screens later I gave up.
However, with so much as a push notification from the app my tickets appeared 20 minutes later!
At the top of the ticket there was a message saying ‘ACTIVATE TO USE’. There were no instructions in the app nor on the Virgin site that we obvious about how to activate the ticket.
After a few hours of searching I found an article that informed me that I would get a push notification 20 minutes before departure and that I had to activate the ticket between then and the departure time or face having to buy another ticket.
I think I’ll stick to the much easier and less time consuming collection method of getting at the station. At least that way I’ll know I have a valid ticket and won’t be charged again!
Totally rubbish mobile app !
Totally rubbish site. I tried to use your app to book ticket 9 months ago but it was so user unfriendly. I had no choice but to give up. I have tried it again tonight, Big mistake! Richard, You should personally compare your app with ‘the Train Line company app’. I have spent over one hour on your app and couldn’t figure it out how to get the mobile ticket on my device. The link or instruction are taking me round the circle. I tried twice and it didn’t work. I went on to the Train line company website and it is so clear and straight forward. But I just wanted to give you one more chance, tried the 3rd time and spent another 20 mins! I give up now. Perhaps I will try your app in a year time and hopefully your IT guys could catch up!
I’m dying out of frustration. My friend bought a ticket for me but she chose this app. We ve been trying everything including contacting ineffective customer support, the tickets are still not appearing.
Needing to register twice?what? Two apps for east or west?! Redirecting me to mobile non responsive design page to register from app?? What? No clear indication about password strength, erasing fields etc. What?
Glad I work in digital marketing so will be able to follow up with a blog post about poor UX and customer journeys using Virgin as an example. Sorry for people who don’t have that option to vent their frustration that way. I encourage everyone to write a personal blog post. Good luck Virgin, soon you’ll be ***** the same way your customers are.
