Join us on the official guided walk around the inside of the historic 700-year-old Westminster Abbey. The English-language tour is narrated by the Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons but this app is also available in 10 other languages.
Kings, queens, statesmen and soldiers; poets, priests, heroes and villains - the Abbey is a must-see living pageant of British history. Every year Westminster Abbey welcomes over one million visitors who want to explore this wonderful 700-year-old building. Thousands more join us for worship at our daily services. The Abbey is in the heart of London.
Once inside the Abbey there is the highly-popular verger-led tour also.
I would recommend this app.
There is really nothing to recommend this app. It requires you to have the screen ‘live’ to listen, if you turn off the screen to save power then it stops, if you leave the app for some reason (say, accidentally touching the screen because you can’t turn it off), it stops. It has no memory of where you were, so if you leave the app then you have to start listening from the beginning. In summary, the functionality is appalling.
In terms of the actual information, well, this is extremely poor too. The information is so basic that I’m sure that you’d be able to figure out most of it just by keeping your eyes open. Instead of providing some hidden insights it’s pretty much ‘this is the tomb of a king. It is near to this tomb of another king. It is in this part of the Abbey’. Really insightful stuff(!). It’s not surprising the information is so basic given how short each piece is. There are 20 locations described by the audioguide but the average description is less than 2 minutes, and some barely last more than 30 seconds! The Tomb of Edward III gets a measly 24 seconds.
It’s hard to see the point of this audioguide, other than to keep people in line, given how much time is spent asking people to stand out of the way of others or ‘move briskly’ through parts of the Abbey. While people will undoubtedly oblige, especially as it’s Jeremy Irons who’s asking, it seems like a considerable waste of his talents, and of the opportunity to really educate people about the Abbey and its history.
