Nearly perfect
This app is so nearly perfect, it just works for anything you could need to ask it. However, I find that inputing longer equations can be very time consuming and complicated as there is no graphical calculator, so many brackets are required, complicating things far beyond what I would expect of this app. Also, I believe that the app should have more offline functionality, as the app is able to calculate answers to equations offline and shows the answer in a yellow box below the input, however, when you press enter, it gives you an offline error, and no answer is shown.
Other than this, the app is perfect — definitely worth the £3 I payed for it
Forget it if you don’t live in the USA
It’s a very clever app, and useful for mathematical, and some technical topics, but for much other information stick with Google/Siri if you don’t live in the USA.
An example of US bias is that when I wanted some statistics relating to Scotland I was offered data relating to several US cities called “Scotland”, but no way I could find to obtain results for the country. I wish I had read some reviews rather than allow myself to be impressed by the trial version; £2.99 wasn’t a great outlay, but I wish I hadn’t made it. The description in the App Store ought to include a warning that the data is very heavily US-biased.
Even the maths is in places flawed; I have found that it tries to interpret some trigonometric expressions that out to either be invalid (eg involving x/0), or should produce a zero answer to provide odd results.
WolframAlpha is a great app
This is an excellent aid for calculations where guessing the the phrasing in a question on calculus, for example, and also more advanced mathematics usually gets you the right answer!
“Derivative of !!!”, or just “f(x)’”works fine! In dynamical systems, plot vector field (y,-x); or “phase portrait” or integral curves give excellent graphical output. All work really well!
As a professional mathematician, I find the app extremely handy. Asking questions and checking answers, sometimes in step-by-step format, would also be a great revision tool for school and ug/pg students.
