The most awful update I have ever seen

I can hardly believe they have done this. When I bought the app V3.7 I had a choice of several different styles and the ability to look at an nice globe in an old world or modern style and then zoom in to street level. Now the zoom into the UK , London, can just about identify the M25 ring road that runs around the city.
They have explained this 'improvement' as getting rid of the jarring styles between different zoom levels. THIS WAS USEFUL !!! Otherwise its just a pretty ball with no detail.
They have effectively castrated a perfectly good app.
I think the only improvement they have made is to themselves as now they don't have to pay fees to Bing or whoever they paid for their zoomed map information.
I had this app for only 4 months before they changed it to something that is virtually useless.

Inept, clueless and appalling upgrade.

Well done 'Nat Geo' - how to ruin a wonderful and highly regarded app in one upgrade. Which corporate idiot or inept techno-geek thought this was a good idea?! And what possible reason did they have for turning this into an internet dependent app? Due to my rural location I can no longer access useful data as I have no 3G. I will therefore be deleting this app and looking elsewhere.

For those of you thinking of buying this app - please don't! Even if you have super fast 4G wherever you go (and you'll need it to use this properly) you will only be encouraging the morons who 'upgraded' a paid-for app and made it 10 times worse.

What a shame

What a shame. A usable atlas was updated to become a very poor atlas.

I bought the app some time ago, referring to it very frequently, delighted that I'd found a good offline atlas. The later updated turned it into a fairly useless piece of bloatware (albeit good looking).

It just about functions at extremely low level detail. That's about it.
