Best known as a former cast member of Saturday Night Live (1996-2002) and from her time on the ABC sitcom Suburgatory (2011-2014), actress and singer Ana Gasteyer is a trained vocalist with a bent toward jazz standards. Also active in musical theater, she made her Broadway debut in 2000 (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and appears on several cast albums, including TV broadcasts of Reefer Madness and Grease. She made her solo recording debut in 2014 with I'm Hip. A native of Washington, D.C., Gasteyer studied violin as a child and later majored in voice and theater while attending Northwestern University. After graduating in 1989, she joined the Los Angeles improv group the Groundlings. This experience led to acting jobs on such shows as Seinfeld, Frasier, and NYPD Blue. From 1996 to 2002, Gasteyer was a regular member of the cast of NBC's comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, where she gained attention playing such characters as music teacher Bobbie Mohan-Culp, NPR Delicious Dish-host Margaret Jo McCullen, and impersonating home-making guru Martha Stewart and singer Celine Dion. During her run on the show, Gasteyer appeared in the revival of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, playing Columbia and Usherette for three months in mid-2001. After leaving SNL, Gasteyer split her time between acting on-stage, in film, and on television, including supporting roles in the hit movie Mean Girls (2004) and the TV special Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005). She returned to Broadway in mid-2006 for Alan Cumming's version of The Threepenny Opera and was back in late 2006 for a brief run as Elphaba in Wicked. She closed out the decade with a variety of TV guest spots, more parts in movies (The Women, Finn on the Fly), and a return to Broadway for the three-act play The Royal Family in late 2009. Gasteyer nabbed a recurring role as a judge on CBS' The Good Wife in 2010, and portrayed Sheila Shay on the ABC sitcom Suburgatory beginning in 2011, staying for show's three-season run. In 2014, she released her solo debut album, a set of jazz standards titled I'm Hip. An off-Broadway revival of A New Brain followed in 2015, and another live television special, this time 2016's Grease Live!, featured Gasteyer as Principal McGee. That year, she also joined the casts of the short-lived TV series People of Earth and Lady Dynamite, and in 2017, she portrayed Mrs. Schwartz in A Christmas Story Live! Meanwhile doing voice work for animated series (Harvey Breaks, The Lion Guard) and continuing to find work with TV guest spots, she returned with her second solo album, the Christmas-themed Sugar & Booze, in 2019. ~ Matt Collar & Marcy Donelson
