Famed for their riotous early shows in Los Angeles, California, USA, in the late 70s, the Bags’ volatile line-up included Alice Bag (vocals/keyboards, ex-Fem Fatale), Rob Ritter (guitar), Terry Graham (drums), Craig Lee (guitar, ex-Cars [not the Cars ], Invaders; Mutards) and Pat Bag (b. Patricia Morrison, 14 January 1962; bass/vocals, ex-Mutards). Other line-ups included Rickey (drums, ex-Invaders), Johnny (guitar, ex-Invaders), Joe Nanini (who later joined Wall Of Voodoo) and Geza X Gideon (later Deadbeats and others). Formed in 1978, an appearance in Penelope Spheeris’ 1981 film The Decline Of Western Civilization (under the title Alice Bag Band) was an early source of publicity. Though their career was not a long one, as individuals and as a band they were fundamental to the development of the Los Angeles punk scene. Lee was a writer for Slash magazine, before joining the staff at the LA Weekly, and the group were signed to Dangerhouse Records, the most important musical clique of the day. The Bags took their name after their appearance on stage, with each member wearing a brown paper bag. They issued only one single, the raucous ‘Survive’, in 1978, but their name was kept alive by the posthumous activities of those involved. Craig Lee joined Catholic Discipline, then Bonehead. Ritter worked in 45 Grave, then, alongside Graham and Pat Bag, the Gun Club. From there he temporarily joined the Sisters Of Mercy. Alice Bag, in contrast, became a backing singer for infamous Mexican Elvis impersonator, El Vez.
