About Challenger

French hard rock band Challenger formed in 1980 with a line-up comprising Denis Drieu (vocals), Remy Devillard (guitar), Serge Hendrix (guitar; formerly a member of French rock band the Hurricanes), Pierrot Roussel (bass) and Jean-Pierre Pollet (drums). The following year they signed to RCA Records and recorded First Round. A formidable record that blended elements of Molly Hatchet and ZZ Top -derived ‘southern boogie’, it brought them immediate acclaim in mainland European rock circles. However, its failure to attract media attention in either the UK or USA disappointed RCA, who did not renew their contract, and Challenger faded from view.
