Corey Cerovsek is a rare breed of musician: his technique and interpretive skills place him among the leading violinists of his generation and his precocity as a child and teen allowed him to achieve phenomenal success as a student and performer, the kind of success that elicits awe and utterances of "genius." Indeed, at age 12 Cerovsek was the youngest student ever admitted to Indiana University's School of Music. He did well there: by age 18 he obtained a doctorate degree in music! That wasn't all -- at the same time he also earned a doctorate degree in mathematics. Cerovsek's educational background is rife with such impressive achievements, but he has fully lived up to the promise suggested by them, performing with the leading conductors and orchestras at major concert venues and turning out many critically acclaimed recordings, like his multidisc set of the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano on the Claves label. Incidentally, Cerovsek is a pianist, too, and regularly performed in concert in that role until 1997. Not surprisingly, Cerovsek's string repertory is broad, taking in works by Mozart, Paganini, Tchaikovsky, Wieniawski, Vieuxtemps, Bruch, Szymanowski, Barber, Corigliano, and many others. Beside Claves, Cerovsek has recorded for Delos, Black Box, and Indiana University. Corey Cerovsek was born in Vancouver, Canada, on April 24, 1972. He began study on the violin at five, and at nine won the Canadian Music Competition. That same year he debuted with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. At 12 Cerovsek won a gold medal in string performance at the Royal Conservatory of Music (University of Toronto). While a student at Indiana University, he appeared with major American orchestras, including those in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, San Francisco, St. Louis, and he also performed in London and elsewhere overseas. After graduation from Indiana University, Cerovsek regularly appeared as soloist with major orchestras and as a recitalist, often with his pianist sister, Katja Cerovsek. In 1998 Cerovsek launched a series of recordings for the Delos label with a highly acclaimed Wieniawski album, on which he was accompanied by his sister. In the new century Cerovsek has remained busy both as a soloist and recitalist. In 2006 he was nominated for a Grammy for his Black Box CD of the Corigliano Sonata for violin and piano with pianist Andrew Russo. Cerovsek plays a 1728 Milanollo Stradivarius, a violin used by Paganini, Viotti, and Christian Ferras.
