Described as having the image of a WAG but the voice of Patsy Cline, singer/songwriter Delta Maid may have been raised in the same area of Liverpool as George Harrison, but her acoustic organic sound has more in common with the country-blues of Mississippi than the Merseybeat of her hometown. Born Katie Foulkes in Wavertree in 1985, Maid developed a fascination with the Delta blues thanks to the record collections of both her great-grandfather, brought back from prohibition-era New York where he worked as a stoker on the docks, and her parents' more contemporary fare of Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and, in particular, Rory Block, whose Best Blues & Originals album inspired her to take up the guitar. Developing a unique fingerpicking style, she began performing across the city's folk clubs, writing her own material and collaborating on a song with Ed Harcourt ("Make Up Your Mind"), before deciding to abandon her vascular science degree at Lancaster University in order to pursue a music career. After releasing her debut EP, Broken Branches, she opened for Seth Lakeman, Ray LaMontagne, and Ellie Goulding on their U.K. tours, performed at the T in the Park, Latitude, and Big Chill festivals, and supported Gary Barlow at his 40th birthday charity show, whose management company she was signed to. Her debut album, Outside Looking In, was released through Geffen Records in 2011. ~ Jon O'Brien
