About deux furieuses
British agit-punk duo Deux Furieuses ("Two Furious Women") combine a raw, stripped-down guitar-and-drums attack with sociopolitical lyrics and '80s and '90s influences. Scottish vocalist/guitarist Ros Cairney and Greek drummer Vas Antoniadou formed Deux Furieuses in London in 2013, bonding over a shared love of PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, '80s post-punk, and '90s alt-rock, and a sense of rage and frustration at the worsening global political situation and the inequities of society. They started writing songs and playing live, and took their name from a description of their live show in a Belgian magazine review. They recorded their raw debut album, Tracks of Wire, with former PJ Harvey drummer Rob Ellis behind the desk, self-releasing it in 2016. It drew immediate critical acclaim, being compared to Harvey, Savages, and Nirvana. The duo espoused feminist and left-wing causes but also put their money where their mouth was, giving all the profits from their 2017 singles "Time to Mourn/From Fear to Fury" and "Everyone Knows" (recorded on a mobile phone on a London rooftop) to a refugee charity. In 2019, Deux Furieuses signed to Xtra Mile, which released their second album, My War Is Your War. Recorded once again with Ellis and led by the single "Year of Rage," the album played up their post-punk influences, with a much more highly produced sound and heavily reverbed, highly melodic vocals that somewhat recalled '80s goth icons like Siouxsie and the Banshees. ~ John D.
