Led by singer Dawn McCarthy and filled out by a shifting cast of cohorts, Faun Fables is sometimes lumped in with the freak-folk crowd, but in fact their music is an idiosyncratic, highly original blend of everything from art-rock to art song, with liberal doses of folk, cabaret, and pure eccentricity thrown in for good measure. McCarthy and Company's first release was in 2001, and their popularity continued to grow over the next few years, boosted by the singer's work with Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy) on his 2006 album, THE LETTING GO.
