About Javier Solís

As a teen, Mexican actor and musician Javier Solís won so many amateur singing contests that he was hired by the venue holding the events so that he would not keep winning. ∙ Solís signed a record deal in 1950, thanks to members of the famous Mexican troupe Los Panchos, who saw him singing in a bar and got him a label audition. ∙ In the late ’50s, he was an early pioneer of the then-new bolero ranchero musical style, which combined elements of mariachi, Mexican folk, and traditional slower dance music. ∙ His best-known song, the strings-driven 1956 ballad “Sombras,” was an international hit especially popular in South and Central America. ∙ Along with icons Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete, Solís was known as one of the Three Mexican Roosters, a nickname given to the men due to their acting and musical talents. ∙ Beginning in 1959, Solís appeared in more than 20 movies, giving him the chance to collaborate with noted actors Pedro Armendáriz, María Victoria, and Lola Beltrán. ∙ Decades after his death, his music continues to find new fans, and the 2006 compilation La Historia de Javier Solis topped Billboard’s Regional Mexican Album chart.
